From Radio & RecordsJust ahead of the Cumulus/Susquehanna closing this week, the changes have already begun: KRBE/Houston VP/GM Mark Shecterle is leaving tomorrow after 18 years with the station, where he worked his way up through the ranks from the promotions department."I have truly enjoyed and feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with you and so many others throughout my career at KRBE," he said in a letter. "The business and personal relationships I have built over the years will always be cherished. I wish each of you nothing but great success!"

The first step in Cumulus Media's plan for the demise of KRBE...plain and simple. Ever heard the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it?" Well...they're "fixing" it.

Think there will be anything different after midnight tonight signifying the Cumulus takeover? The deal becomes complete May 5th right?

There's no doubt that Cumulus will sack most of KRBE. It has happened in Susquehana's, now Cumulus' DFW cluster. Question remaining: Who will gain from the coming KRBE collapse?

:'( sad... I can't imagine Houston without KRBE. That station has been such a powerhouse over the last 3 to 4 decades. Outdoing many FM's like KKBQ, KNRJ, KKHT (96.5), KTHT, KQQK (Spanish/CHR), who else is there. I really hope this boils down to nothing more than speculation but without the same GM/VP that has been with 104 through most of its successful run, things are bound to look different.

I should know by now to never under estimatemate stupidity in the upper ranks in the broadcasting industry. I truely thought that Cumulus was smarter than to f with KRBE, their only successful radio property in Houston as of three and half hours ago.I like Rock 1037, I know I am in the vast minority, but the air staff gives 110% and the station works harder than many at having a street presence. I don't know if I have adapted to the music or it has gotten better. It is no replacement for KRBE though. Never will be. Hell Rock 1037 is still without any air talent 50% of the time after a year and that is inexcusable.KFNC needs a lot of work and a change of focus to being a true News station and not another Talk station with a few hours more news than 740 AM which saw the Winter book come in with the lowest 12+ numbers in years. If Cumulus moves 97.5 to 104.1, it will be one of the biggest waste of frequency spectrum in Houston in the 30 years I have lived here and the ratings for KFNC will not go up more than a few tenths of a point, unless there is a makeover of "The FM News Channel".We have "The FM News Channel" and "NewsRadio 740" and the two combined still don't make a half decent news operation. I only hope that KTRH's numbers continue to slide and Clear will decide that maybe it is time to invest the money back into 740 and try and return it back to it's days as one of the countries great all News stations.I don't know what Cumulus has in mind for KRBE, but chances are Houston will have another have assed station on the air where a great station was broadcasting. Cumulus has not finished building KIOL yet, Cumulus is not ready or even maybe capable of putting a great station together. Especially when everything is decided in Atlanta and who are they to say what Houston wants.Hopefully it is only the GM/VP of KRBE leaving, but I still don't see how the station won't change.Moronic!Mike O

This is what is giving rise to satellite radio. Stern was on the forefront indeed. He didn't want to be held accountable to groups of suits and stockholders who know nothing about the intricacies of the radio business, but tend to make the business decisions based on limited knowledge and experience. That is what you see with CC and KTRH. The Jones family knew radio, but more importantly had the best people in place to run thier powerhouse stations KTRH and the original pre CC KLOL. Flashforward to today where a great broadcaster (Susquehana) has sold its premier Houston property, run by a group of real pros, to a company that thinks they will run it better from Atlanta. EXACT SAME SCENARIO. They do have Pat Fant here, who is a very good broadcaster, but based what has happened in DFW with Susquhana's properties, it is clear decisions are coming out of Atlanta. Unless there's an ego issue involved, I can't see why Fant would fire Marc Schecterle when Schecterle ran such a successful and dynamic operation top to bottom. Fant was at the helm of KLOL at its very best under the Jones family operation. Without Schecterle and the team under him that is sure to go, if not gone already, KRBE will be a different station in a matter of weeks and not for the better. In the end, all because some misinformed, radio wannabe suits in Atlanta want to play Houston radio will we see the demise of a great station, sending more scrambling to radio's new horizon--satellite.

If they start F'n with KRBE and change them to a diffrent format EX: Talk or Rock,,, I will never support Cumulus radio ever again. I mean I like Rock but they dont need to kill one of the best programmed top 40 stations around.

KRBE bills something like 50-60million dollars a year (some CRAZY amount). I can't imaging that even as stupid a company as Cumulus would F-with the programming of it. Probibly just cutting what they think is 'the fat'. But crazier things have happened! Just look at how CC has ruined perfectly good stations with both ratings and revenue.

$50 or $60 Million! There are top 6 TV stations that don't bill that. They're a strong biller, but more likely $20-$30M, and that is huge for a radio station NOT number 1 in the number 7 market. In any event, the changes Cumulus will most likely make could cost them a third or more of their annual revenue. Now that's looking out for your shareholders!

I honestly hope all the folks (thousands) within Cumulus Media Partners have enough sense to leave a money maker alone.Sadly, modern business tends to buy gold mines, fill them with concrete and blame the problems that arrise on something completely unrelated.
