KRE Museum Open House (July 17)

If you're looking for something to do on Saturday, July 17, stop by the historic KRE Building in Berkeley for the annual California Historical Society open house.

Gates open at 9 AM, and the festivities run from 10 AM until 2 PM, hosted by Carter B. Smith.

If you haven't been by the museum lately, here's your opportunity to check it out!

Take the Ashby Avenue exit off I-80 in Berkeley to Shellmound, then turn into the driveway under the big radio tower. See you there!

I hope Mike Black will be there as usual.

Mike Black will be there, as will Mike Stand and Mike Check.

The question is ... will djj, rickradio and lenhockey be there? Be there and find out!

Yeah, but the Prince Trapped in the Body of a Disc Jockey, Carter B. Smith will be there...that's the important thing!

Re: CHRS Radio Day By The Bay (July 17)

Some of you may have heard Dave Sholin on KGO with Ronn Owens a week ago, during which Your Duke displayed his formidable talents as a classic, rapid-fire auctioneer.

This Saturday, Dave will be serving as guest auctioneer during one of the auction segments featuring vintage radios during Radio Day By The Bay.

We'll also be wishing a happy 69th birthday to Tommy Saunders, who will also be making a special guest appearance at the event.

Be there!

Hey Guys:

I was wondering if anybody can help me with this.

When KPAT AM and FM changed to KRE in 1972 did it change to all jazz or was it a MOR station first?

Reason why I am asking is I noticed in the braodcasting yearbooks that KRE was listed as MOR from 1972 to 1975. In the 76 yearbook it was listed as "contemp jazz".

Thanks for your help

T.J.

T.J.,

Come by the open house on Saturday and meet Alice Potter and other KRE/KPAT alums. Alice was the GM at the station for many years, and knows more about its history than just about anyone.

Hey DJ:

Thanks for the invite but I live in Delray Beach in Florida. I'm a little to far away.

Does Alice Potter have an e-mail address I could contact her with?

Hi Folks:

I went today and had a very good time. This was my third year attending. They auctioned off radios and other related items. They served food, drinks.

Inside the KRE building they interviewed Dave Sholen (KFRC etc) for an hour. Later in the PM they interviewed Tommy Saunders (KOIT, KSFO) for an hour. Both interviews were very interesting.

I also enjoyed the exhibits inside the building which included hundreds of radios, and many parts and components.

I bumped into Ginny Prior, who was a newscaster and sidekick to Gene Nelson and Dave Henderson at KSFO and KSFO/KYA. I beleive she was also a lone DJ when KSFO played standarts. She was very pleasant and I enjoyed talking with her.

"They" doing the interviews was actually "me," working with Dave Billeci.

Among others, Ed Baxter from KGO was also there, as was Matt Vasgersian from the MLB Network, Rick Kurkjian from the California Music Channel, plus the great Ben Fong-Torres, Rex Allen and Johnny Morris. From our swell circle of pals, rickradio, djj and lenhockey were present and accounted for. It was a blast!

It was indeed a great day at KRE. DJ, you forgot to mention that before the event really got going KCBS great Ken Ackerman dropped by to donate an ancient console radio for CHRS auction.
Another KRE alum present was Stephanie Dilley. Someone had dropped by what looked like a sales presentation book and Stephanie found her picture and her shows one-sheeter. When Alice Potter went through the book, she keep saying "I hired this person...I worked with this person..I started this show...etc" It was exciting to see these people get excited. KRE Day is the best..Kudo's to Steve Kushman and his CHRS staff.
I wish I had more time to talk to Johnny Morris, who's career spansover 40 yrs in the Bay Area.

Hey Guys:

Sounds like you all had a great time.

Too bad they don't do somthing like that here in South Florida. With all of the legendary stations down here I would definatley go.

I helped out at the Live@KRE2010 thing - wearing one of those yellow shirts - schlepping auction items up as they came up on the list ... managed to get a couple of things: a "B600" (1959-62 era) Zenith Trans-Oceanic (last of the tube models) and an old Stewart-Warner table-top AM/SW set. Both work, but need tweaking, especially the Zenith. Got a pretty good sunburn as well... forgot the lotion!

A second round of the "passed" auction items sold off most all of them... many bargains! Nice to see/hear Carter B again, and Dave Sholin was a great auctioneer (he took a course, I heard) and the music and the "Romance Of Helen Trent" play were fun, too.

Too bad this event didn't get mentioned in Ben Fong-Torres' Radio column, at least not that I saw - but KCBS and others (?) gave it mention, which always helps.

That presentation book is the property of Rick Kurkjian of the California Music Channel, who is a KRE alum.

Rick saved all those wonderful items (rate cards, press releases, coverage maps, promo pieces, personal photos and press clippings) from his tenure at the station, which I think coincided with his college years at Cal; he's a graduate of the Walter A. Haas School of Business, and a heck of a good guy.
