KRIK 100.5 Refugio?

More than a week ago I was picking up this strange Spanish station on 100.5 in San Antonio playing regional Mexican (Branded "La Rancherita" at night, pretty much every night. A bunch of other stations from different cities were coming in, so I didn't give it much thought. I didn't fail to notice that it had *horrible* audio though, sounded like it was being fed by a 16 KBPS audio stream.

Then earlier this week I noticed the audio quality sounded a lot better. NOt perfect, but it sounds about 80 KBPS or 96 KBPS now. Anyway now it plays country music branded as "The Ranch", and I just heard a liner saying it was KRIK-FM. I did some searching and discovered KRIK is out of Refugio. No idea where that is but is KRIK a new station? I've never heard it before now. Only info I have is a TuneIn listing and something on Radio Locator.

They never really sounded good. I didn't know they flipped. I know they were off the air for one weekend when I searched thru the dial.

Refugio is between Corpus and Victoria. KOUL moved its COL to Refugio not too long ago so 106.5 could move closer to Corpus. Really, there's not much around there, and KRIK doesn't citygrade a very large population.

As for whether or not it's a new station, yes, it was a CP won at one of the recent auctions. Hispanic Target Media owns it and has been buying up stations in auctions for the last four or five years. They own "Amigo 93.5" KGWT as well as several other "Amigo" branded stations that do some derivative of Spanish-language programming. Most of them are regional Mexican. Unless things have changed at some of their other properties, I believe KRIK is the only English-language station they own.

If I were the owner of that station KGWT I would get that woman off the air immediately...I think she is smoking crack according to those facebook posts I think she has some issues. If that woman is trying to lease a building next door to them to start a whole new radio station..I dont think she understands radio at all! You dont rent a building then you have a radio station.

Hahahahahahahahaha LMFAO! I was about to say...

Well at least she's gone now. This new country format's obviously being run by someone with half a brain.

The site is http://bronco93.com/.

Or maybe not...

It's now as if they have an iPod or CD changer running the music, or just a computer on shuffle. It's just a mix of country now, some classic but most of it a little newer. No commercials, a couple second pause between songs, and the few liners that I've heard just say things along the lines of "Don't change the channel, this is 93.5 Bronco FM".
Sometimes many songs are played in order with no liners in between them, I've heard the same go for liners at times (that's how I know it's on shuffle). The website gives a 404 error when I visit it. It's as if all the professionalism left from KGWT, I wonder what happened?

As for KRIK I can't pick it up any more at nights like I can with KGWT in north San Antonio, so I don't know what they sound like. I'm assuming the same, since KRIK and KGWT were similar brand new and pretty good sounding stations a couple months ago.

KRIK 100.5 has been off the air since mid to late May. I've driven through Refugio about 10 times since then when I'm on my way to Victoria and it's always off the air when I try to listen in. I drove through there this past Tuesday and it was off the air still.

I did find this in Googling "100.5 The Ranch". http://radioinsight.com/blog/headlines/58158/the-ranch-enters-south-texas/

Guess the deal didn't work out, after all. Too bad.

KGWT appears to have flipped, too. They're playing Texas country now under the name "Bronco 93". I've noticed this recently from San Antonio where I can pick it up pretty well at night.
I think this is KGWT, anyway.

The old Amigo Facebook page leads me to believe the station changed hands or that something big happened. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Amigo-FM-935-KGWT/302659926416902?filter=1
I am falling out of my chair reading those facebook posts... sending shoutouts to the prison and stepping in dog poop. Priceless! :D

I think KRIK-FM is back on the air?

I just barely heard it for a minute or two through the static here. From what I heard it's just country music playing with a few seconds between songs. No imaging in the break I heard, but they might have some.
Anyone around the Victoria area who's listening to them? I did find their Facebook page but that's it. http://www.facebook.com/1005TheRanch

It's on the air. I heard them also playing Nell's Over and over again when I tuned over to them.

But that's not country! LOL.

Maybe they mistook it for country since it's got Tim McGraw in it.

In case anyone missed it KRIK flipped to Spanish and has apparently been playing Spanish since December...

Though I never heard it until I tuned in last week and was able to receive it with a rather cheap portable MP3 player. I've recorded about a 40 minute aircheck so you all can hear the strangeness that is this radio station.

Just a huge variety of Spanish music (some regional Mexican, some Spanish pop-rock from the sound of it, some dance style tejano I believe, and I even heard Selena Gomez near the beginning) What's the latter doing on a Spanish station!?! Most songs are tagged with the title and artist in Spanish at the beginning.

The imaging I've heard seems to have been produced in a bit of a hurry though it's decent. They're calling it The Ranch still as well as El Rancho (Spanish translation I believe). It has two names if you count each translation as one.
Liner backing music for the imaging's country for the English ones, Tejano and regional Mexican for the Spanish ones.

They do seem to run ads though the only one I heard played twice and was for a tire shop / burger depot / trailer and car lot. Funny but cute at the same time, you'll understand if you listen.

Audio is nice and clean, uncompressed from the sound of it. No crossfading I can tell between songs, it's as if they're using Winamp or Windows Media Player with no plug-ins.

But enough describing. Here. I had to remove a few seconds on two occasions in which the antenna got unplugged, sorry.

Enjoy.

Yeah with tropo as bad as its been the last few days its pretty easy to pull in distant stations. I've even picked up a few class A's from as far as 2 hours away from me.

I actually like it, especially now that I have a good receiver to filter out all the interference from other radio stations than the one I'm trying to pull in. Gives me a lot more variety on the dial LOL.

The signal comes in like a local in Victoria. I haven't tried it in Cuero.

That's a bit overstated. Very listenable signal in Victoria, but not a local. It has to afford protection to KBAR-Victoria, so KRIK is more like a good Victoria rimshot.

I've never had any problems listening in my car. There is little to no static on Navarro or where US 59 meets the city limits.
