KRIV-26 Houston news now in HD

Saturday, Feb 1 was the first night of local news in HD on KRIV. They also have new graphics. Overall, I give the new presentation a 9 out of 10. I just hope their content will catch up to the other 3.

A 9 out of 10? Or 9 out of 100? :) Just curious, what is in HD? Do they have video shot in the field in HD or is it just the studio cameras like KXAS?

For what it's worth, Ed Bark's blog reports that Fox station KDFW in Dallas is supposed to switch its news to HD on or before the Feb 17 DTV transition day. That's in a little over two weeks. They weren't HD tonight at 5pm so I assume they aren't quite ready yet.

I fixed my original post...I was thinking 9/10 for picture quality. Their studio shots have the most natural color of any of the Houston stations. Weather graphics look great too. The field shots looked pretty good. Some of it appeared to be widescreeen SD (not stretched 4:3) and most of it 16:9 HD.

Don't bet on it as long as their current GM and ND are there. Their motto I'm sure is along the lines, "If it looks good..."
There's a place that needs a major spring house cleaning.

More observations:

Some sports shots, I believe from an Astros spokesman, was shot in compressed 4x3 that when stretched looked like natural 16:9. Also, national stories and sports replays are 4x3 and they are showing them with black sidebars. I would like to see them add logo'd sidebars or at least use the blue sidebars they once used when they showed 4x3 programming.

Can I add that Mike Barajas said that starting Febuary 16 they will switch to HD but a limited signal and we will need to add an extra antenna till sometime in august. Then they will start broadcasting at full force.

Actually, what they said was: As of February 16th at midnight, analog signal on 26 will cease to operate and they will move the digital from it's current channel of RF 27 to RF 26. The power level on the digital signal after the move will be lower than it currently is. You will also need to do a re-scan on digital tv tuners in order to continue to receive Fox 26. In addition, they will have their full power digital signal on RF 26 by the fall. I don't remember the date in the promo.

I think a lot of markets will require a rescan after 2/17.

In Houston channels 8, 11 & 13 are moving their digital signals to their current analog channels.

Here in Austin Fox 7 will be moving its digital signal from 56 to 7.

In San Antonio no less than EIGHT stations are changing digital channels on 2/17.

In Dallas channels 8 and 11 are moving their digitals signal to their current analog channels.

No wonder Nielsen thought to hold off on the Feb took. Talk about trying to credit the right channel to the right station!!!

Must be a Fox O&O thing. KTBC in Austin has been running similar promos, but they're promising full power by sometime in March.

Obviously the DTV transition delay will probably delay a lot of the moves mentioned above.
For what it's worth, one of the people who frequents this board runs and EXCELLENT website about DTV stations: http://www.rabbitears.info
(many of you probably know about this already) You can look at each market to see what DTV stations are on the air and where the full power stations will ultimately wind up. It also lists all the low power DTV stations on the air.

Another interesting page is from the FCC: http://www.fcc.gov/dtv/markets/
It's a map book of all full-power digital television stations authorized by the FCC. You can look at each market to see the analog vs. digital coverage maps of each station. You can see where various networks will gain or lose viewers based on how the DTV switch impacts thier affiliates.

Will someone please explain to the folks at KRIV how to properly display various video resolutions (i.e., 4x3 SD) when doing an HD newscast.

Nothing bothers me more about HD programming than seeing 4x3 SD stretched into 16x9 - not just one clip, but multiple clips...

Either Pillar box it or have the capability of recording network footing in HD... Grrrr....
