KRKO gets FCC approval

I saw this a couple of days ago and I am excited, hopefully the new signal will reach down to my neck of the woods (Tacoma-Lakewood in Pierce County), I enjoy listening to KRKO when i'm up in the everett area and now i'll be able to listen to it hopefully where I live. I am especially looking forward to hearing NASCAR, the Everett Silvertips and the Everett Aquasox.

Anyone know if Pat Cashman is 'reconsidering' - going back on the air there - due to this power increase?

I hear he's perfectly happy just doing the KCTS pledge drives.

I knew they were GOING to go 50,000 watts on 1380. It was a question of WHEN.

Now how does this affect KITZ 1400. And if you were in Tacoma, how much would you get out of KRKO's new monster signal with Tacoma blaster KKMO just 20 kilocycles away?......

I kinda think it's weird having a 50,000 watt KRKO. I mean, I wish them well. But with so much other sports radio content over the air now, how much will it mean to Skotdal and company if they have to pay a 50,000 watt power bill without getting 50,000 watt results. They'd have to go into HEAVY promotion overdrive to make it worth it I'd think...

Maybe some badly needed format tweaking on 1380 kHz could come in handy. A full service AC could do VERY well in Snohomish County. With this weird weather (damn that global warming) we've been having lately, it couldn't hurt....

The fact is KRKO is actually approved for 35kW day, and 50kW with a wicked directional North West, toward Anacortes at night. I doubt you'll get much in Tacoma.

It's a shame really. I have a lot of respect for the station owner. Now that the long battle is almost over for improving the signal on KRKO, albeit not as much as originally hoped, (or were promised), the value of AM stations are going into the tank quick. Younger audiences have no clue that AM radio even exists, and they are the future radio listeners. To top it off, high power AM stations are expensive to operate.

To make matters worse for the future of AM, as I saw first hand at the Consumer Electronics Show this past year, many new auto sound devices don't even have a AM tuner in them. The AM tuner in new cars is being replaced by MS's Sync, Ipod integration, satellite radio, and soon WiMax internet and file delivery.

You're right. And it only adds fuel to my belief that AM will eventually be the band of local (i.e. LPAM, Part 15) broadcasters. A belief long ridiculed by many "professionals", but I predicted this even long before HD radio.

As far as Burmese pop goes...well, you STILL heard it from me first. Just wait. And KUBE is still DONE. It's old, done, washed up, people have moved on, get used to it.

I have seen the future, and radio (as we know it) ain't much a part of it.....

But I'll give you one hint: analog TV first, analog radio NEXT. What you put into it today is what you get out of it tomorrow....

I Have Spoken,

Sometimes I can get a decent signal of KRKO where I live, however KKMO does have a pretty strong signal in my neck of the woods, which kind of stinks because I would much rather listen to KRKO's programming rather than KKMO's spanish programming. I guess at least for ESPN's programming i've still got my XM which will have to do.

Been trackin the KRKO upgrade for a while now and have to say im excited!

It will be the first "power house" (50,000 watt) AM HD in the seattle area,
so it should be interesting to see how they exicute that!

Also make ya wonder, how is KJR doin with this news? I know they are 90% local
as opposed to KRKO primarly carrieing the ESPN format, but still.
Until now the only "cometition" that KJR had was KHHO in tacoma, and that doesnt
really count all that much because its still CC! hmm, fun stuff! :)
