After several months, I finally got around to cruising up to Snohomish to LOOK at the KRKO site to see what all the fuss is about. It's MUCH different than I imagined...there are a couple of places in close proximity ... but otherwise the tower site is not that big a deal. I imagined there were farms surrounding the thing, and not the case. Craven (commercial farm) is a neighbor. otherwise, closest view would be up on the hills surrounding the valley ... and it's hard to claim EVERYTHING that changes in your view is subject to your scrutiny and approval.
I had heard the "towers are bad for birds" argument...but the birds have to be doing a pattern weirder than US Air over the Hudson, and probably need a "death wish" too to hit those towers!!
I think I would consider the towers next to I-90 for KIXI, KKNW to be more of an "urban intrusion" than the ones for KRKO; as they are part of a large natural & preserved wetland (though towers & wetlands co-exist just fine). Even the 1540 tower is in the same wetland but tucked far enough out of the way that you have to LOOK to find it.
Meanwhile...sampling the station it sounds good. I'm still not a fan of sports format (and think it's a dang shame they aren't going full bore SnoCo programming with the thing), but otherwise it sounds like a well-programmed station. My vote would STILL be to put the sports content on their new stick, and make 138-0 much like KGY serves Thurston county with mix of full service, local news/traffic, sports.
