KRKO losing ESPN in January?

lankypup said:
The Blathering One hasn't been wrong on any of this stuff yet. He says ESPN wants out of KRKO by January 2009. In time for KIRO's flip to sports. http://blatherwatch.blogs.com/talk_radio/2008/08/espn-to-all-spo.html#more

710AM going all sports - probably the second-worst-kept secret in the market (next to the M's moving back to KIRO). At least now we have a timeline for how long the simulcast will stay on the air. Let's see - ESPN out of KRKO in January, M's spring training games start in March. Sounds good to me.

methinks Blatherbutt nailed this one too. ESPN to KIRO, along with Mariners, Sounders, and Seahawks sounds like a strong combo. What's the verdict on the sound of KIRO on FM so far?

My verdict on KIRO FM: It's the same, dull, tired news product with a couple of interesting talk shows. Will people find it on FM? Absolutely, but the majority will be people who already listen to the station on AM. In my view, there's not enough interesting KIRO programming to bring new listeners to 97.3. And I'm sorry, but Jane Shannon sounds like she's half asleep even on mono FM.

KIRO is banking on a bump from being on AM/FM, and I think they'll be disappointed. Any gain won't be nearly as signficant as they need before they split the AM-FM programming and put news/talk on FM and sports on AM. That's guaranteed to happen. "The foreseeable future" of having KIRO on AM/FM ends with the winter book.

Why can't another owner just put sports on FM first and take the wind out of KIROs sails?
Someone will....and will learn the same lessons Bonneville learned about putting news/talk on FM TWICE in the Puget Sound. Splintered market for FM music my @$$! - TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT! There's a LOT of genres yet UNDISCOVERED instead of recycling the same crap over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and........

KJR will also be losing ESPN. The only reason KRKO had it was because they agreed to carry the syndicated shows ESPN wanted to claim they had in the market. KJR allowed it caused it kept them out of a fight with ESPN about Mike & Mike, Kornheiser and Dan Patrick and they gave ESPN RADAR clearance in the market for 2 minutes of national an hour. If ESPN goes to KIRO, KJR will have to find something else (probably fox sports) for nights and weekends. KRKO should go oldies and as much live and local as they can afford.

It's a coincidence you post that, given the repetition of your messages.

Wow. Two national minutes an hour is a LOT, especially considering KJR's costs.

IF ESPN goes to KIRO, that would be an excellent time to grab Grosby or Gastineau for mornings (or afternoons) and really weaken KJR.

KRKO should go back to local with feed from some (ONLY SOME) national shows....everyone I know stopped listening when they went all sports. :(

Then that means...
That 1380 will go back to the news/talk format back in the 90s.
Riiight.

All that's left is stuff from wacky conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones.

But bigger, much more important things are happening in Snohomish County as we speak. Where is KRKO when we REALLY need them?

So word out of a KRKO staff meeting last week was that Owner Andy Scotdahl has instructed the staff to discontinue using ESPN or any form of mention thereof....what will they become after ESPN is gone? Maybe the Fish will sink???? Andy might be after a quick buck and sell the place after boosting it to 50K.
