KRKO to 50,000 watts

I sure hope AM radio ain't dead cause Andy Skotal at KRKO in Everett announced this afternoon that they
have cleared the final hurdle and will now proceed with construction to increase power to 50,000 watts!
A local owner who's spending millions to keep local radio in his community. The dream is still alive.

Except it isn't the size of the stick, it's what you do with it. KRKO now has a chance to be a player regionally, not just locally. Will they make that jump? I hope they do, it would be good for Seattle radio.

I'd LOVE to see KRKO become a regional player. My hope is that with the bigger signal, they'll be able to improve thier revenue stream, and will afford more local talent. Maybe a daily dose of Mr. Cashman..... One can only hope.

Finally a decent signal from Everett coming in to the metro. Now they can retire the old AM beast down at Lowell. I spent many an evening down there horsing 'round with some of the gang, including Moose Moran. Moose actually lived down there for a year or two. Those were good times.............

There are two things I wouldn't count on:

1. A great signal into Seattle and South from 1380, with poor ground conductivity. (38kW proposed non-D day, not 50kW like everyone has been claiming).

2. A good signal toward Seattle at night. 50kW yes, but the 4 tower DA has the major field strength at about 310 degrees. Seattle-and South is effectively in a big null at night. Lynnwood will be at the southern edge. Really not much better than they are now, just a bigger power bill to send a big signal into Friday Harbor. The DX'ers in Finland will be happy though.

Its too bad. Because they have spent big dollars to get this thing through all the politics, but will end up with a better, but certainly not market-wide signal. That is assuming the neighbors don't rise up and create more problems when they light up all the telephones and CATV systems within a two mile radius of their site.

I wish them well.

Its sad that KRKO has lost the "local" feeling...nature of the beast I guess.

Anyway, it's 50000 watts i won't be listening to :(

Charlie, did you read the article? Andy goes out of his way to emphasize that he'll remain a North Sound station with the emphasis on local programming. He acknowledges the folly of trying to become another Seattle signal. The Everett pro and high school sports will remain a staple of KRKO. KRKO is going for better penetration in the North Sound area. With all the noise/interference competition AM faces these days it takes the full 50-gallon signal to be heard anymore! Good for you Andy.
