KRLA and today's earthquake

So I checked out KFWB, KFI, KABC, and KNX for earthquake coverage. Out of curiousity, I wondered if Salem was airing any coverage. I tried to open KRLA's stream, but it didn't work. So, did KRLA provide any coverage, ie did they use TV news?

Fanboy, you are incorrect in your reply. KRLA broke into regular programming immediately after the quake and then went wall to wall virtually commercial free, from Noon to two.

They did have a news person in a news room some where and also took listener calls for the duration.

Does KRLA use an outside news service? KGIL does I know for sure, they were live during the quake with Michael Jackson but he kind of just mentioned it in passing. I tuned out so I don't know what happened after.

KFI, which does have a news department and they dumped Rush for the quake, then they went back for Dr. Laura. I also tried KFWB and their coverage seemed to be as I remember from years ago, good for them!

I'm not sure about KABC, I think they have some local news people, but that might change since they are not owned by ABC. In any event I didn't check them, nor KNX but I never really got into listening to them for news even when they weren't just across the hall from KFWB.

Did any stations go off the air?

None, there were no power outages or other major interruptions. There were problems with cell phones and landline phones suffering from call volume overloading giving no dial tone or access. A 5.4 is a strong shake but does not do major damage except for knocking stuff off shelves.

One interesting side note, Mike Nolan who used to be KFI's "Eye In The Sky" before Clear Channel cutbacks now reports over ISDN from his home. He had to use his "OOMA" computer access device to call into the station. He does the sponsored endorsements for OOMA on KFI so that was an extra for them.

Not nessessarly power outages. I have knows some stations that would go off the air if a cow farted too close to the tower fence. I bet you anything someone somewhere is wondering why his directional pattern has suddenly gone haywire because the shaking shook loose a clip from a coil in a tuning unit somewhere!

Actually, ABC News, ABC Radio Network, and KABC-AM, are all part of Citadel. You might be thinking of KABC TV, they're still owned by Disney. ABC News has a local news bureau that is used by KABC-AM, as well as some in house news people, and Metro.

I don't think that even during the Northridge Earthquake of 1994 many stations were off due to difficulties at the towers. There were major power outages though during that event which was approximately a thousand times stronger. Most of the major stations here were not near the epicenter of this latest quake, and most of the damage was to structures near the center and were mostly falling bricks, cracks and broken objects which fell. Most things here are constructed with the fact in mind that there will be earthquakes and we do try to keep the cows away from the transmitters. California is noted for our happy cows. There are hundreds of earthquakes and most of them are so slight that most people don't notice them, however I can't speak for our bovine neighbors.

There was video on the news of Judge Judy which was taping and you can see the cameras shaking, I imagine it is up on You Tube by now. Also on the Bill Handel section of KFI's website there is some classic video of former KNBC-4 newscaster Kent Shocknek diving under the news desk during an aftershock of the 1987 Whittier Narrows Quake.

When I was working in cable TV in the 80's and 90's we did have trouble with the big satellite dishes being shaken out of alignment so there were a lot of calls about snow on the non local channels after a moderate or stronger quake.

Takes a lot to impress a cow. I doubt seriously they care. They are too busy out playing football behind the barn.

Yea, the footage of the Judge Judy taping is up. Judge Sheindlin is shown hitting the deck, the gallery is shown heading for the doors.....and the litigants just stand there! Obviously not from California. Kinda humorous. Don't they know those studio lights are heavy, and hot?

When I was responsible for training the crews for cable access tapings the securing of the safety straps or chains around the lights was most especially emphasized. More exciting is when one of the halogen lamps dies with a loud bang, always made me jump.
