A thread on the national (Coast to Coast) board on radio contests has drifted into a discussion of KRLA in the 1970s.

Thanks KM, KRLA 1110 was really neat! Did I ever mention while working the KRLA Booth at the L.A. County Fair, some genius decided to steal our 'Speaker'. I told the Sheriff driving around but he never located the Perp!

Thanks for sharing your memories of the station, Steve. That was a fun time in radio, and KRLA is (rightly) a legend.

One question: how was Art Laboe to work with? I'm still amazed every Sunday when I hear his networked show. He's gotta be in his 70's now, and he keeps on going!

Great question Doc! It's Scott by the way, I do get called Steve & Todd too!. Art was somewhat of a recluse. The only time I actually remember seeing him, is when KRLA took on the Penthouse Pets in a Softball game. It was a lot of fun, and I remember Art just said "Hi" to me, in a high pitched voice. On the other hand, Art had a Son, Art Laboe Jr., and this cat was wild. He was one of the Hitmen, and tragically died of a Cocaine overdose, cocaine was not new to the Laboe family. KRLA was my first paid Radio position at age 17, and I gave it up to take the Morning shift at KLOM in Lompoc. Stayed 3 Days, mornings don't become me!

I've read that Art Laboe is up in his 80's. Speaking of that age group, is Huggy Boy still around? There are both around the same age.

Re: KRLA, Art Laboe & Huggy Boy

I'd say Art is about 83. Huggy Boy left K-EARTH in 2002, and I think he's still with us.

Re: KRLA, Art Laboe & Huggy Boy

I worked with Art in 1965 at KLFM (105.5) in Long Beach. A great guy, and I still see him from time to time as we carry his show Sundays here in Palm Springs. Yes, he is in his early 80's. Huggy Boy is still alive, but not on the air anywhere anymore that I know of.

The last time I enjoyed KRTH was when Huggy Boy was on the air.
______________

Re: KRLA, Art Laboe & Huggy Boy

I used to love listening to Huggy Boy on XPRS 1090 in San Diego when, during the 70s and early 80s, he did an oldies/doo-wop show after dark. I believe the time was brokered, because the only commercials I remember hearing were for record compilations from Huggy Boy (and Art Laboe? I think so but memory fades). It was perfect radio for late summer evenings driving around with all the windows open after work :)

Curious that 440:Satisfaction doesn't even LIST Dick Hugg.

Remember Rick Ward from KIEV?

He did the same type of Oldies show selling tons of compilation Records. The only problem was IIRC, he didn't pay any Music Royalties from the sale of those records and went to prison!

No not really Doc, you have to list yourself, it's self service over there!

More on Huggy Boy–-- “Good luck to Ya”

Huggy Boy was way Cool. I attended an Oldies concert at the “Fabulous Forum” in 1973 and Huggy Boy was the host. Huggy Boy along with the Real Don Steele were killer at the “Heart & Soul of Rock & Roll” KRLA!.

Hugg, (Huggy Boy) Dick: KRKD, 1951-55; KWKW, 1954; KALI; KGFJ, 1955; KBLA, 1965; KRKD, 1965-66; KRTH, 1975; XPRS, 1981-82; KRLA, 1983-98; KRTH, 1998-2002. Huggy Boy left "K-Earth" in early 2002

Why?

Loved him on KRLA.

You could likely guess. Management thought his style didn't fit the station image and he played stuff not on the 150-song playlist.
______________

Sorry, I left LA years ago and did not make that obvious connection.

Yep. Huggy Boy actually had a personality and he talked about the music he played. I remember once someone requested some Elvis and he played "In The Ghetto" and then came back on and questioned why he played it. Pure Huggy Boy.
______________

From what I can pick up from LAradio.com is that he fell in his house and was sent to a nursing home for recovery but still has not returned to the airwaves.

Re: Remember Rick Ward from KIEV?

Sorry to hear that about Rick Ward. Nice guy, who nearly hired
me for his short-lived 13X in San Diego back in the late 70's.
440-Sorry a lot of wrong information on that site. Guys who
did traffic for Metro are listed as talent on some big stations,
kind of like some of the LAradio.com regulars, who have been out
of radio for 30 years, or do traffic reports for multiple stations.
You would think they are the Real Don Steele, Dees or Robert W Morgan,
with all the ink they get.

What ultimately happened to Ward?

Where is he now?

One of the sites indicated he ran a trucking company, but I don't know how old that information is.

Rick Ward/440

I enjoyed listening to his brokered show at KIEV. I don't think he spent more than a year or two in Jail. Oh, and about 440DotCom, I'm even in there. For an extra $25 you can list the Career you never really had!
