KRMG Changes?

Yup. And unfortunately these days the harsh truth is anyone that doesn't say "how high would you like me to jump sir?!" proably either won't be hired or won't survive cuts.

I guess I'm trying to figure out what kind of employee takes a job where they're not willing to do what they're told as long as it doesn't require anything illegal.

I hear this kind of comment a lot. And while I understand standing your ground on matters of moral or ethical integrity, this type of comment suggests that there's some inherent virtue in not being a team player.

I mean...they're paying you. Not the other way around.

This is a great point, Gary. And when you are trying to get a job at a station like KRMG, you know what you are signing up for. As you said, it's one thing to stand your ground on moral or ethical matters, but at the end of the day, if you aren't willing to do what your employer is telling you to do, you are always free to seek employment elsewhere (unless bound to a contract, in which case you should DEFINITELY be doing what your employer is telling you to do).

That's just it. After de-regulation you either put up with the crap, go to small market and starve (potentially), or get out. There aren't good choices left, save a few exceptions to the rule across the country. KRMG used to be one of those exceptions. From what people on the board are indicating (who knows how accurate), things are changing for the worse there. That's sad considering that's one of the last hold-outs on radio news in the state. KTOK hasn't been much to write home about for quite some time for real news people. I can see why people might be touchy about "loosing" KRMG as one of the last decent radio properties for news. Where exactly are decent radio news people to go as indicated in the previous comments?

The people inside the KRMG newsroom are cringing at his pieces. As one reporter there told me last week, "his pieces are an affront to what the rest of us try to day everyday."

Ed, if this is true, SHAME on whoever said this.

#1, Rick is doing what he is told, I am sure. As previously discussed in this thread, that's (generally) how you keep a job.

#2, I've heard Rick's pieces in the morning... what the heck slant are you talking about? Do you mean that he is occasionally a flesh-and-blood human being and adds a little warmth to what would otherwise be a lifeless story? Yeah, that's a terrible strategy... only somebody like Rick, or Paul Harvey would try something stupid like that. Especially being a known personality in Tulsa... the less we hear of him the better, right?

#3, as mentioned above, I've heard Rick's pieces in the morning... they sound perfectly fine to me, just as good (or better) than anything else that comes out of that "news room" (what's left of it). There are some good guys still over there, but they're squeezed between promos for StormCenter and syndicated talk. For all I knew, the stories were written or at least outlined by somebody back in the newsroom, anyway. What awful things have you heard him mangle in a news story?

If we want to talk about silly, let's look at today's "Extreme Weather Alert," which included a dry tease from Joe Kelley promising the latest on our "Severe Weather Threat." Seriously. Glen Schroeder said "we're talking about the most deadly kind of extreme weather." Technically true, but when held up against the deaths in Joplin it sounds pretty ridiculous.

While we're "panicking" about all the "extreme weather" in Green County, it might be interesting to take a look at this map http://www.newswise.com/images/uploads/2008/12/17/fullsize/deathmap.jpg which shows Tulsa having a SLIGHT greater risk of death from weather, but nothing compared to near O.K.C., or the Harrison Arkansas area, or the Topeka Kansas area, or Fort Worth, or Denver, or...

There's no reason to slam staffers for doing their jobs, or to slam Rick for doing what appears to me to be an admirable job... there are so many GOOD reasons to slam Cox Atlanta for standing and applauding what KRMG is doing. To me, THAT is the crime.

Of course, as you might imagine, they couldn't possibly care less what I think. ;D

I heard a promo this morning:

-----

"The National Weather Service has issued an Ozone Alert..."

*BING-BONG*

-----

...AARRUUGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!! *Bangs head repeatedly on nearest tree trunk*

I don't think the NWS issues Ozone Alerts. Those come from the DEQ and Incog.

Somebody might mention that to KRMG... Assuming I'm remembering the wording of the promo right (I heard "Ozone Alert" and the tones & saw red), I'm guessing they assumed since it was on the NWS website, it must be from the NWS.

My mom was laughing last night at the "team traffic" after the fireworks; she said after one report, "busy near Riverparks? Right after the fireworks ended? You're KIDDING!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!"

I tried to explain it was an an image thing, but she still thought it was one of the dumbest things she had ever heard.

I told her this was the same station that plays the tones 3 days before a winter storm hits. ::)

The KMR should definitely hold off on the tones on Ozone Alert days. Save them for Red Flag days.

When an Ozone alert is issued, Tulsa buses should be require to honk their horns every 30 seconds. Two longs and a short. It would give the drivers something to do, and it might help generate events for "team traffic".

Correct, but the NWS releases those as Air Quality Alert statements.
