KRNB: "Grown & Sexy"

At least that's their new slogan. It sounds like 80's, 90's, and today's r&b. It's good to hear Big Baby Kenny J. again as well. I think overall, it's a small improvement.

They have tried every conceivable slogan and presentation of Urban AC, and it really doesn't matter, because their signal is their worst enemy. Their constant tweaking of the format and revolving door of personalities, is only alienating the listeners that will put up with the difficult signal. I realize Service has tried to do something about their KRNB signal problems, and I like Ken Dowe and Hyman Childs, but they need to find some continuity and stick with it on KRNB. "Grown & Sexy" is original, but it's terrible. It sounds thuggish, and is that the target audience for Urban AC?! They can do better.

Ok, maybe bad choice of words on my part. Hip-Hopish. "Grown & Sexy" sounds like it is geared toward a "Hip-Hop" audience (more like K104) than the audience they are supposed to be targeting.

I've made no bones about how I think Hip-Hop has destroyed mainstream R&B. It's the reason I left Urban Radio. I don't want it to do the same thing to Urban AC.

When I think of "Grown & Sexy", I think of sophistication. I think of steppers. Last thing I think of is "hip-hoppish"

I'm wondering if they'll update thir website, they need to put a now playing window on there because www.yes.com sucks.

Buc, I don't if you are simply an aficiando or an actual tenured employee of said Urban AC, but I am the latter and let me tell you... "Grown and Sexy" is ALL ABOUT reaching the parents of those that listen to "thuggish" radio. So in a way, you are both right...

There is absolutely no crossover appeal in the moniker, which is counteractive of what Urban AC was. However, they understand that kids are directing their parents to the radio, so why not create a happy medium. Hell, you think T.I. or Sammie goes in the same stop-set with Teddy, Donny and Luther?! NO WAY, but those folk down the dial do. That ruff-ruff Nighttime Dog breathing all over the radio for everyone in the 18-54 demo.

It will work with the demo, but the numbers will be the same. Oh wait, do I see a CONsultant hiding behind that clothing rack of lingerie? NAH!

Now that "Nighttime Dog" is the only problem that I have with KRNB right now. His voice is very annoying. Although I am not a fan of syndication, if it's true that Keith Sweat is coming out with a syndicated version of "The Quietstorm", I would rather hear that 7pm-12am.

Ron Chavis is the worst quietstorm jock ever. I think Al B. Sure has a radio show thats distributed via the ABC Radio Networks.

Its just said that in market No. 5, we can't get a decent Urban AC that can be heard over the entire DMA. I guess the thing to ask is would the urban ac audience be better served if KRNB were on 104.5 and KSOC were on 97.9. Would the Urban AC format make more money on the stronger frequencies?

Yes, the Urban AC stations would be better served on the better frequencies, but there is no way Radio One and Service are going to throw the number one and two stations in the market overboard to move their struggling Urban AC stations to the stronger frequencies. The only thing that Radio One and Service can hope for, is for a stronger frequency to become availiable, buy it and move the format to that stronger frequency. Service tried to get WRR a few years ago when the City of Dallas wanted to sell the station. However, it never happened. KRNB has done everything under the sun to try and improve their signal, but it hasn't helped. CBS/Infinity really never let V100 develop on 100.3. They mismanaged the format badly. Until Service or Radio One is able to find a stronger outlet, the DFW market will have to struggle with weak frequency stations.

It sounds like KRNB is trying to do a format like Hot 92.3 in Los Angeles is doing. It is geared toward the 18-49 demos, that the advertisers love. However, I still think they'd do better to serve those older demos. Hell, I might try a format like Majic 102.9 in Shreveport is doing. It's a hybrid Classic Soul/Blues (or is that what KKDA-AM is doing these days?). With weaker frequencies, you have to find a niche. 94.5 The Edge did well in the late 80's/early 90's, because they were playing Alternative music you could hear no where else. Either that, or with the absence of Smooth Jazz in the market, you could do something like KBLX/San Francisco, a hybrid Smooth Jazz/Soft R&B station. I think appealing to the younger demos with the weak frequencies, will not work.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. What about us "30-somethings" that is at a crossroads between hip hop and r&b. Respect to the classics, but I don't want to hear everything that my parents used to listen to. I want hear my Dwele, Jill Scott, Remy Shand, Kindred Family Soul, Musiq, etc.. I feel like we are being left out in the cold. As time goes on, I hope that I will be hearing more of these artists on KRNB.

I hear what your saying Bucwhyl. And, you should have a place to hear your music. I'm just saying, most people aren't going to listen to a weaker signal station to hear Jill Scott, Remy Shand (who is great, where's he at and when's his next CD coming out?), Kindred, Musiq, etc. You can hear most of them mixed in with the Hip-Hop on K104. If KRNB is doing this type of presentation. I'm sure you will hear them and a lot more. I'm 35, I don't mind the Neo-Soul sound, I just don't think every new R&B song should have to include some sort of hip-hop or Rap. What about us R&B lovers, that don't understand hip-hop, its culture, or appeal?! I want to see Service succeed with KRNB, because I applaud the small broadcasters who have not sold out to the big companies (ie Clear Channel, Radio One). I just don't know if they will be successful going in a newer R&B direction with their weak signal. That's the only point I'm trying to make. I hope that I'm wrong for your sake. It's happened before. ;)

I totally agree with you, but when was the last time you listened to K104? I've never heard Kindred, nor any other Neo-Soul Artists played on that station. I'm 36 and I feel the same way. If I want to hear "hip hop laced" r&b, I can listen to K104, but that's not what I am feeling. As far as signal, have KRNB succeeded with older r&b on that signal? So why not put newer r&b on 105.7 and let 94.5 have the old school r&b. Both weak signals. Both are ratings failures, so what difference would it make?

In all honesty, it's been quite awhile since I listened to K104. When I'm up there, normally I listen to Skip Murphy and then turn it off after the morning show, because I can't handle the Rap/Hip-Hop, so I was just assuming they were like WGCI/Chicago or V103 in Atlanta, where they mix it up good. I guess you have to explore all avenues. Didn't KRNB try this a few years ago. I think I remember a "Newer R&B" slogan?! I can't remember. There's been so many.

Yes they did and LAWD do I miss it! KRNB was da bomb back then.

I see a trend, my brothers. Isn't it funny on this blog how when "The Wig," "Nanette," or "What in the $%&# is wrong with Dallas' urban radio", we are just about the only ones on this blog that cares, yet it's those stations' numbers that dominate.

It's just a shame these stations we appreciate, listen to and maybe have worked for (all of my life) are now reaching to the lowest common denominator! The days of the FLY JOCK creating intelligent conversation while having a blast are long gone. Now, we are stuck with these fools, like Ron Chavis, thinking sex and soul is the way to beef ratings.

Give me Jill Scott, Common and The Roots and any other brown liquor music any day of the week. Oh yeah, that's on my iPod not the radio!

That's exactly what I've been wanting to say for a while.
