KROB - Corpus Christi

How long has K-Rob in Corpus Christi been on 102.3 in San Antonio? Just discovered it a few days ago.

What's the point with rebroadcasting a radio station from another city in San Antonio anyway?

K272EK 102.3 FM there in San Antonio has been rebroadcasting KROB 1510 AM from Robstown/Corpus Christi for over 6 months now. Maybe even more. It's highly illegal. That extended the coverage area of KROB by oh...I don't know...something like 103 miles! It's insane the illegal things Gerald Benavides does. I guess he keeps doing them because he never gets caught or fined by the FCC. I have no idea how the other broadcasters especially someone like KEDA hasn't complained to the FCC about this. It's ridiculous!

Actually, back in January K272EK was playing regional Mexican music branded as La Zeta. That's about three months ago.

You keep saying it's highly illegal, but non-comms are allowed translators outside their service area. Without that loophole we wouldn't have K-Love and CSN Radio and TBN-TV.

Non-comms are, indeed, allowed translators outside their service areas. However, they have to feed all translators not in the reserved part of the band over the air. Of course, they can feed a translator with a signal from another translator, but I'm not sure if that's the case here.

I'm not sure if KROB is a non-commercial. I heard a commercial on it once.

Fred, that is not a "loophole", its a "feature".

Anyway, commercial, or non-commercial, translators that rebroadcast AM stations are not allowed to have 60 dbu coverage outside of a 25 mile radius around the AM transmitter. For those not good with math, 103 miles is more than 25 miles (I'm looking at you Jerry).

Maybe KROB considers itself an FM station now that it is on 94.3 in Corpus Christi. 94.3 is even in the station I.D.s

I would think some Conjunto on FM in San Antonio might provide some variety.

La Zeta is a format on his other stations (like Yorktown/Victoria) so he must be bouncing around feeds from his other stations because back in November it was KROB.

OK let me rephrase...it is highly illegal to translate outside of your service area if you are not a non commercial FM broadcaster.

K272EK 60dBu has to lie within the 2mV/m contour of KROB(AM) and also the the translator contour has to lie within a 25 mile radius of the transmit site of KROB to be considered legal to translate an AM to an FM.

It's not even close, Matey.

If this is what's happening, he's an honest to goodness, Captain Jack Sparrow, Pirate...

You mean "Tejano?"
Or are Tejano and Conjunto different from each other?

Maybe KEDA should purchase one of the 3 translators currently for sale in San Antonio and translate their Conjunto format on FM (legally).

It's a little different. Conjunto is more along the lines of Norteño (Northern Mexico style) music with artists like Los Dos Gilbertos, Ramon Ayala, Los Relámpagos del Norte, Los Tigres del Norte, etc. It's a more traditional style with bajo sexto, accordion, and drums. Tejano (which is more of the Southern Tex-Mex style) with artists like La Mafia, Emilio Navaira, Roberto Pulido, La Sombra, Fama, Mazz, etc. is a more progressive style with keyboards, drums, and six string/electric guitars. Some groups like Intocable combine both styles together.

Back to the subject of translator logistics: Here in Austin we have THREE commercial FM translators that are fed by Hybrid Digital subchannels from a local FM station. The HD channels qualify as the parent station even though the real audience is listening to the analog translator. This allows them to program what they want to the Austin FM audience as a local station.

Here in Austin Border Media uses the HD subchannels of sports KTXX to feed the translators. Hey, it's an additional revenue stream like renting space on your tower. They could easily do the same thing in San Antonio.

Certainly not an expert on these matters, but when I have listened to it in the past KROB 1510 seemed to lean more to the older Conjunto music as opposed to the Tejano as found on KSAB 99.9.

What frequencies are the three translators for sale in SA on?

93.7 and 105.9 (Radio Ola) Price: $650K for 93.7 and $450K for 105.9 (Yes...Crazy!)

93.3 (Carlos Lopez) Currently in an LMA to Paulino Bernal but will consider selling. Price: Make offer

I'm sure you if you really wanted the best one available in town (signal wise), Gerald would sell 102.3 but last I heard he wanted $1.2 million. (for a translator! lol)
