KROB seems to be out of San Antonio

I'm not sure if KROB and it's translator in Corpus Christi are still up, but they probably are. However it seems that K272EK is no longer simulcasting KROB-AM, the conjunto station.

KROB probably had lots of listeners in SA. I know they weren't even doing it legally, and now I think it may be safe to say their run is over, as I just heard an ID for the new station, identifying 102.3 FM and 1500 AM.
K272EK's now simulcasting KBRN 1500. The new format sounds like spanish soft rock, but I'm not too sure as I don't know Spanish, so please correct me if you know what the new format is.

Maybe, KEDA-AM can buy a translator and keep the conjunto alive on FM, that might get them lots more listeners from KROB.

Well, that's just great. Rebroadcasting KBRN isn't any more legal than relaying KROB, which was discussed here a while back. The translator lies outside the daytime coverage area of KBRN, which makes it an illegal operation.

How ridiculous is that, since KBRN is licensed as a daytime only station? But these people apparently aren't concerned with such details.

Well, KBRN's wikipedia article says they have a construction permit to increase power and broadcast at night. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KBRN

And how many stations do these guys have around the San Antonio area? They've got KBRN (1500), KFLC-CA (87.7, and K272EK (102.3). What other station can they simulcast on 102.3? They probably want to keep the signal.

No, they don't. The construction permit was canceled by the FCC due to serious deficiencies, making nighttime authorization for the station a dead issue: http://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/getimportletter_exh.cgi?import_letter_id=11570

Sure, they want to keep it, but the point is that they can't legally simulcast any of the other stations on the translator. Their best option is to sell it to someone who's interested in rebroadcasting an FM HD sub-channel or, as you mentioned, an AM station like KEDA that needs better nighttime coverage.

Fixed the wikipedia article. Also, I was listening to 102.3, and heard an ID for KBRN 1500 and K273EN 102.3 earlier. I guess the translator changed call letters?

Don't know what's up with that, since the FCC database still shows K272EK.
