KROCK HD2: Now with NuMetal!

Was only a matter of time before they started playing Shinedown, Dead By Sunrise, and other wonderful Active Rock Staples. KROCK2 had been one of the best pogrammed Alt. Channels in the country because they stayed true to the format. Sucks....

I think "trucker rock" more adequately describes those bands than numetal. Numetal is stuff like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Sevendust, Godsmack, Slipknot, Mudvayne, Static X, etc. ie: heavier stuff that's not traditional heavy metal

When I turned on the channel today, I was greeted by Slipknot, so I knew something was up. If this was just a few weeks ago, I would have said it made sense since there's no station playing this music anywhere in NYC. But since WAXQ-HD2 just started broadcasting "Rock Nation", I think K-Rock should have stuck to their guns. Maybe this was a knee-jerk reaction to that move, but it would make little sense considering the limited listenership of all HD2 channels.

Of course, I will say that while I enjoyed K-Rock (2) at first, it dawned on me over time that they had a rather limited playlist that wasn't updated very often. So I can't say it's a huge loss. I've found WRXP to be more satisfying as of late.

The sound of me vomitting.

What stupidity.  K-Rock seems to just not understand the concept of brand management.  For the last three years the k-rock2 brand has been "New York's Only Alternative."  And their audience has come to expect an alternative product.  For them to throw in arena rock dilutes their brand equity.  It alienates listeners.  It causes tune-out.

Additionally, terrestrial K-Rock has no listeners.  What on earth are both Q and K-Rock thinking by recreating a dog format?  In my unresearched opinion, it would behoove Q to focus on new progressive rock, not new arena rock.

I wonder if the record companies are paying for the spins....

arena rock

Furthermore, its not even really arena rock, because none of those bands actually fill arenas. It should really be called ballroom rock or theatre rock. The alt/indie bands are just as likely, if not more likely, to fill a room in NYC as these Ballroom Rock bands.

Just a bad move. I thought radio was an industry that catered to niches. Penetration strategies don't work, they just fail.

The thing I don't get is they still kept all the Alternative acts (but now included about 25% or more in the playlist with Shinedown, Linkin Park, Hollywood Undead, Creed, Flyleaf) I heard Death Cab seugued into Creed - i thought i was listening to RXP.

I know CBS Online seems to be reformatting alot of their stations but I can't understand the need to do this - I used to listen straight through the workday to KROCK HD2. Now I can't for more than 15min

Actually, what KRock was doing overlapped what Last.fm/Discover (over on 102.7 HD2) does now. Not entirely - if anything, Discover is even more all-over-the-road than RXP is. (Except I like that RXP does that - maybe it's me...)

I knew it was only a matter of time before they would screw it up. It was inevitable. Proof once again that they (including the "experts") never learn their lesson.

For what it's worth, I was listening on and off yesterday, and the only active-leaning bands I heard were Chevelle, Anberlin, and the Used, all of which I feel still fit the format. And they're still playing some good up-and-coming bands like White Rabbits, Company of Thieves, and Passion Pit. Plus, they also seem to be playing more classic alternative, including some surprising cuts like The Smiths' "Girlfriend In A Coma" and Radiohead's "The Bends".

Their playlist still lists Creed and Shinedown among others, so maybe I just got lucky. But even if they do still throw in such acts, I'm still finding what I heard yesterday to be satisfying enough to keep listening. It still sounds a lot better than WXRK's main channel has sounded at any point in the last decade and change.

The bigger question here is where is Alternative heading into the 00's decade? For the past 5 years it's really embraced its roots from the 80's and early 90's... but will it be "re-embracing" the late 90's, early 00's (i.e. Limp Bizkit, Nickelback, Linkin Park) sound?

Ballroom rock killed the format.  It's ratings suicide to revive it.  "Break Stuff," a.k.a. the song that ended Woodstock, has a completely different meaning and set of implications to the 26 year old today who may have liked it when he or she was 16 and in high school.

Yeah, there may be specific instances where one song by a NuMetal band could be appropriate on alternative today, Limp Bizkits "Rearranged" is one, Linkin Park has couple as well.  but, Cold, Disturbed, Drowning Pool, Puddle of Mudd, Nickleback, Papa Roach and other ballroom rockers never made anything even remotely melodic. By and large, NuMetal was the hair metal of the millenial generation.  Best to just let those cd's collect dust next to the Winger and Damn Yankees albums in the trashbin of fad music past its sell by date.

Totally agree with you except Papa Roach gets a ton of airplay still from "Last Resort" , "Scars" , and "Forever" - the last 2 went for CHR adds! (maybe even the first??)
