KROI-FM

What do yall think about Radio One flipping KROI Praise 92.1 from gospel to FM News? Have you ever seen a black gospel station go all news?

Here in Boston, when W I L D 1090AM was with Radio One
They switched Urban AC, to Classic Urban AC on W I L D 1090am,

brought an FM (97.7 Made it Hip Hop "Hot 97.7") late 2002-2006

2006 few years later it turned to W I L D FM (Urban AC) for about four months (1090am became Classic Soul with Tom Joyner Morning and no radio host the rest of the day only music and commercials) this 97.7 was for about six months
Now 97.7 is with Entercom but now (Rock)

Meanwhile around 2006 wekdays Sun Up/Sun Down 1090am became "NewsTalk 1090" They had Tom Joyner, Warren Ballentine, Al Sharpton and Classic Soul until sundown with no radio Hosts (Off the air at sun down) Weekends was Classic Soul no radio hosts and PSA Programs at various times

That's the cloest to what you're saying

I thought this was a joke, having a News/Talk station on FM and calling it "ROI", for "Return on Investment"!

It's actually

Radio
One
Incorporated

Also, Radio One seems to be diversifying away from strictly Urban/Gospel, they've flipped a Gospel station to Jack FM in Ohio recently. Not sure what's going on over there.

This might shed some light:
http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2011/11/why-news-92-is-taking-over-praise-921.html

"What we did when we launched Praise was shifted Majic's (KMJQ 102.1) audience over to Praise, so you had a lot of duplication between the two," general manager of Radio One Houston Doug Abernethy told The Defender. "So you compress the ratings on Majic to grow the Praise station and for the past five years, its not really generated any kind of revenue. With Praise going away, Majic's audience will grow, leading to more ratings dominance, which leads to financial growth."

If the only growth you get comes at the expense of one of your other stations and it doesn't make enough on its own (relying on combo buys) then going after an entirely different demo makes a lot of sense.

Totally different ballgame. Radio One's "Syndication One" urban talk effort does not even remotely compare to what is happening with KROI.

Most notable is that KROI has many star reporters and anchors already in their stable; especially the morning drive anchors (Lana Hughes and J.P. Pritchard) who were unceremoniously dumped in June from the market's heritage AM outlet, KTRH, after almost 30 years at the station.

Radio One not only has done something totally uncharacteristic of them, they actually are doing it the RIGHT way.
