KROI Radio Now 92.1 is done

If true, best wishes for those who were let go.

Having said that, it’s about time a change was made. It was ridiculous that Radio One appeared to be satisfied with four and a half years of zeroes in the monthly numbers. The launch of the new transmitter provides a good opportunity to try something different.

Now we will see if change means a new format, or a sale of 92.1.
 
I seriously doubt gospel, that is not one of their growth formats. And the spanish-language formats in Houston seem to be well occupied at the moment.
Regional Mexican format has only 3 station in Houston, Que buena 102.9 which doesn’t play enough music, La Raza which has signal issues, and the Translator of La Caliente, which could probably be a good fit for 92.1. Or even leasing it out for the translator of LAPOWER.

Leasing KROI, assuming R1 would even entertain the idea, would cost a fortune. It's highly unlikely any small upstart could afford or stomach that kind of arrangement.
 
New tower.... I wonder if the ratings will follow? Gospel? Mexican Regional?
The new site is only a small distance closer to the center of the market, and it will still miss much of the population. They are also dropping 400 feet in antenna height, although the power increases to 40 kw.

They already tried regional Mexican ("grupera") and it did not work. Gospel leaned way too old to be salable.

The biggest problem with regional Mexican was the culture of Radio One not being compatible with that of the Hispanic culture inside the building. It might have worked if they had located the station in separate offices.

Note: this is not a "wokeness" issue... it is about different social norms, different languages, different cultures. We have seen, in the past, that not every cluster can be a positive environment for any kind of ethnic station.

KTJM, KQQK and KLTN are all reasonably well performing variants of "regional Mexican" and have decent enough signals to compete. The first two are now 3rd and 4th rated Spanish language stations in the 18-49 ratings in the Houston market, and that pretty much crowds the field.

A more logical choice would be a true Reggaetón rhythmic format targeting the second generation such as Entravision's Fuego format with the Shoboy morning show. The only issue there is that such a format tends to pull Hispanics away from Urban stations in a very significant manner.

I can see 92.1 being k-love
They would have to purchase a license to use the name in Houston from Univision.

I knew a Radio One employee who worked there when 92.1 was acquired and turned into a Regional Mexican station. This person was toxic as hell and not someone I liked being acquainted to (but had to). This person would complain about the Hispanic culture to the point where I thought they were racist.

Last I checked on social media, that person is now long gone.

I know you keep bringing up the issues inside the RO Houston office, but it's been over 15 years since that happened. Some silly office uproar shouldn't stop them from going a certain direction. Especially since everyone is probably replaceable and radio offices keep getting smaller and smaller.

Having said that, three and a half regional mexican stations seems like oversaturation.

It is still registered and valid. Remember, EMF has bought the Univision license (or shared it) in several other markets.

This is a socio-political subject that represents risk, challenges and fear among anyone who speaks of it, so suffice it to say that the interests today of Hispanics are "different" from those of African Americans.

In my daily dealings (nearly all my friends and family are "Hispanic") I find that there is a growing feeling that Hispanics have been "left behind" by the last year's events. An example is that fewer and fewer Hispanics are now on network and cable TV except in Spanish language programming.

I don't know about today, but until quite recently it was used as a specialty show name in the market by the service mark owner.
