KROK 94

Before KTUX, I listened to Shotgun Ken Sheppard on K-ROK 94.
Late 70s....I really liked that station. On Sunday nights, the
jocks would get together on the air and do a sort of PSA (public
affairs program)where people could call in and ask them questions.

I like K-94.5...but still miss the sound from years ago on the
same frequency.

I moved to east Texas in 1988 and heard many older listeners and freinds talk about K-ROK and how good a station it was. I dont know much about it's beginnings and why it later flipped. Has it always been associated with KWKH and did it broadcast from the same studios?

They have been together as long as I remember. A friend of mine
did weekends at KROK back around 1981. I'd go by and look at the
studios -- they were very nice.

AFAIK, they have always been associated with KWKH. For quite a few years in the late 80's and early 90's, they were KWKH-FM.

During the 1970's, KROK was one of the few FM's that could be picked up with any reasonable signal in Longview. I used to love to take my portable radio up to Lake O' The Pines, as it was closer to the Shreveport towers and KROK and KMBQ (AOR Q-93) were like local stations up there.

I recall, in the summer of 1976, KROK had a late night female jock with a very sexy voice who loved to play Heart's Barracuda. Being 11 years old at the time, I could just imagine what she looked like. :)

KROK of the 1970's had a very similar format and sound as KRBE in Houston, another great top 40 station.

When did KROK flip to KWKH FM?

When did KROK flip to KWKH FM? Was it before or because of KMBQ's flip from AOR to Top 40? I'm thinking KMBQ flipped to Top 40 in late 1983 or 1984?

It was well after KMBQ flipped, probably late 80's. KMBQ increased their power and flipped to from AOR to light rock around 1983. They later switched to calls KITT. KTAL flipped from country to AOR in fall of 1984. KROK flipped to KWKH-FM sometime after this, probably after KTUX went on the air in 1985.

I did not remember much about KROK. I loved KWKH-FM's overnights, programming geared toward the truck drivers. I thought that was great. They would mix in music with comedy and it was so original.

I always thought 98 Rocks was better than KMBQ was. And, KITT was a better AC station than KVKI was. When I worked in a restaurant in Longview, we used to play KITT. <P ID="signature">______________
