Krok Out at WSB

Cox is making big money in Atlanta. Other markets, not so much. As a whole, the company is flat and/or off , I could be mistaken.

Since Clear Channel bowed out, Cox is printing a lot more money in Atlanta.

On page 5, it looks to me that they made a post-tax profit of 20 million bucks in the 13 week quarter. a mil and a half a week profit, and they can't afford a cut-rate talent like Krok?

He had all the bad parts of the Kimmer, except that he was free of consistency and often logic challenged. It was amazing to hear the occasional meltdown- I recall one show where a series of callers were flinging racial slurs, and you would hear the delay dump chop up the flow of conversation. Krok would make the mistake of going back to callers before the delay had a chance to build back up. The hilarity of this unprofessionalism is compounded be the fact that he would always say "Right Back to your calls!" and then proceed to NOT GO RIGHT BACK TO THE CALLS and give a pinheaded soliloquy.

And speaking of that... there were often times that he would refer to some "shocking" or "Revealing" audio clip he had for three segments of an hour, then on the fourth segment, he would proceed to build up the clip with his "Serious" voice, going on and on about how much gravity was hinging upon you hearing this clip and the social relevance of it and blah blah blah... and just as he's about to play it, you'd hear that hiphop song that ended his hour, which would cause him to go silent for a few seconds and then say all flustered and deflated, we'll get to it after the news...

So IMHO, This listener says (with a pronounced gay lisp)- Firing Chris Krok? "I think it was a smart decision..."

Even though you hated him it sounds like listened to him a lot. Thats what a good host does.

Oh, I'd turn it off quickly most times, but sometimes I would listen, especially on late night drives to/from Athens where I can't get the Coast to Coast show to stay on my truck stereo, and I was sick of the CDs I had with me. It was mostly how bad he was that kept me listening- kinda like watching videos of awful bands on youtube. Search for "Complete Hoogie Boogie Land" on youtube and laff your ass off. I wouldn't say that Complete is a great band because they have 60,000 people watching their video, but apparently you would. If that's the depth of your complexity, so be it. I listened because nothing else was on = He's good. ??? whatev.

btw- Anybody ever read the David Foster Wallace essay "Host"? If you ever dreamt of being a talk show host, that'll change your mind.

I heard him. I didn't listen much, cause he sucked.

870/WWL and 1510/WLAC are two clears that come boomin' into the N. Ga. area like locals. They carry C2C.

Grew up listening to WBZ in Boston. They have always had an overnight talk show that was not politically oriented. It was tremendous fun to listen to Larry Glick, Norm Nathan at night. Just yapping to the old lady from "East Bum@#$%" was entertaining.

Maybe Krok wasn't the talent for the job, but WSB should keep the local flavor. Don't go syndicated just to save a few bucks. This is the current problem with commercial radio. They are offering such a poor product that consumers are happy with Ipods and really harsh sounding Satellite radio as alternatives. Corporate radio owners are thinking that by cutting costs you become profitable and you do, until you can't cut anymore. Then you have to sell spots...........

I will miss Krok on at WSB at night. I frequently listened while doing dishes. I liked his focus on local issues -- Katherine Johnston coverup, Debbie Johnson drunk politician in Alpharetta, immigration issues, and other topics that no one else had the time or energy to delve into. He was also able to get local personalities and politictians to come on his show. I also enjoyed the Scrooge drama he did for last Christmas. Very fun. He was really different than the other talk shows out there. Hope he lands on his feet somewhere.

I do NOT like Michael Savage and rarely listen to him for more than 5-minutes at a time. I cannot stand his negativity and poor attitude on many issues. Glad he's moving to later at night.

I like Herman Cain, but will miss the focus on the local subjects.

I've also noticed that WSB has been playing a lot of PSAs. (I work for a nonprofit so I'm glad they are supportive.) But this usually means that they aren't selling the advertising that they used to. Probably because the Braves have switched to another station taking the revenue with them.

And the big 750 ratings numbers just keep slipping and slipping - How low can they go?

On a good night 810 WGY comes in and its a Coast affiliate, or 770 WABC (except on Fridays). There's also 1110 WBT, 840 WHAS, or XM Radio channel 165.

Technically to 0. I would guess they'll pop up closer to the election. Maybe this is big fall off that was going to happen as soon as they lost the Braves?
