KRON 4

Since KRON will be Mytv network, what will happen to the 9 O'clock news? Will they move to the 10 O'clock spot and compete against KTVU FOX 2. Also, do you think, any possible chances that FOX will purchase KRON 4 and turn it into FOX O&O network? Since someone posted KTVU and FOX has a rocky relationship. Also, how long does KTVU contract with FOX?

I doubt FOX would want KRON, but who knows. Hopfully someone will buy it. My bet: Dr. Phil at 10PM. Hardly watch KRON because Young has drained so much out of it.

KRON is so pathetic that it's getting to be TOO easy a target for criticism. Gary Radnich keeps referring to "poor old KRON..." I read recently that one of their execs consulted with a numerologist, and has added 2 digits to the end of their posted address on Van Ness for "good luck." Maybe the new My Network programming will bring them some. "Fox 4" does alliterate nicely.

They are dropping the 9:00pm news and running MNTV from 9:00pm to 11:00pm, with Dr. Phil staying in place at 8:00pm, where it pulls decent ratings.

From KRON's point - if they moved Dr.Phil to 10pm, they'd be weakening their case to have it. CBS could just use their leverage to evetually move it to their CW station that could/would do the same thing. And CBS has Dr.Phil rights across the country wherever they have the CBS/CW usually. What does Young/KRON have to give to the table? 1 market. That's why 8pm for Dr.Phil is a must for KRON, inorder to keep him, as Dr.Phil gets most exposure then, and makes more ratings than a 10pm. Anyways, it seems KRON wanted MyNetwork as an insurance just incase and when CBS does eventually does take Dr.Phil away from them.I wonder if other My stations that will have Dr.Phil rights as well will be able to do that, and if Fox will be fine with it. It's been reported that Gannett bought WATL - note, Gannett has Dr.Phil rights in Atlanta, and WATL will be MyNetworkTV. For Gannett, they could probably get better ratings doing the same thing, though it'd probably be the rerun episode as the WXIA would probably get the first run one. Don't think Fox would like it too much though if East Coast My stations did the 9pm-11pm, when most are on the 8pm-10pm schedule.

MyNetworkTV sounds hoaky. I wonder what network will go down first, Mytv or CW? My money is on MyNetworkTV. Too many cable/sattelite channels to compete with.

Yes, it will probably be hokey. Time Magazine's cover article a week or 2 ago was on this "telenovela" phenomenon. MyNetwork will probably be the first to get this stuff on the air, but they are not the only ones working on it. The traditional broadcast networks have been losing audience share for years. Like soap operas, reality programming is comparitively cheap to produce, created some real excitement, and brought some BIG ratings. But they are worried that reality programming has run it's course (except for American Idol), and they're looking for the next big and cheapthing. If the first shows of this type are hits, expect to see this kind of programming on NBC, CBS, and ABC. NBC has a lot of important people working on it - and they are the very same people who produce telenovelas for their Spanish speaking sister network...I'm blanking on the name.

But from KRON, Sinclair or any smaller station point of view, if they are going down the drain with My, they won't be the only ones. WWOR and many other stations will also be going down with it. That's if it is a bomb. Plus, KRON basically defeats KBWB 20 out of this. KBWB will be running 24x7 infomercials this fall or not long after, and would be one less competitor in the market, as they'd be insignificant. So, KRON is fortunate to get the MyNetwork affiliation deal, while still keeping Dr.Phil.

Geez, what programs does KRON 4 has right now? News, Dr. PHil, sex in the city, Fear Factor, Inside Edition, The Insider, ET. Anything Else? KRON 4 news ratings is in the 1's, the last place of all of the 5 bay area news station. Also, KRON use to do a 3-5 rtgs, before NBC yanked them. It used to be #1 or #2 in the news. What happened? WJXT and KTVK does very well as an independent status, but not KRON. WHy?

It could be the market size, and station ownership. Belo is more skilled in news than Young. Jacksonville is a lot smaller market, thus WJXT can still be a big fish in a small sea. Belo has synergy of duopoly in Phoenix, a market still considerably smaller to San Francisco. Both KTVK and WJXT have a more robust programming lineup, including Oprah in the schedule. KRON competes against CBS, NBC, Disney and Cox (which owns 2 stations), who all have access to more resources. KRON should strike a deal with KBWB, offering KBWB some cash amount, to pick up all their syndie shows, permitting KBWB to go infomercial-only. Shows including My Wife & Kids, Elimidate, King of the Hill, Fresh Prince. Not that KBWB has much to offer.

I won't be watching the carnage because I've got Dishnetwork, which just added Slueth Channel. 24 hour mystery shows like Knight Rider, A-Team. Plus I've got HBO. So I've got no time to dilly dally with KRON or channal, which is getting new calls.

Wow. Just saw a "video journalist" piece on the KRON 9:00 news about drivers running red lights in San Francisco. It was terrible. It was uninsightful ("running red lights could cause accidents"-thanks for that), repetitive, and poorly produced. It looked like a high school production. Just awful.

Of course. They let the pro reporters go because Young Broadcasting is too cheap

It is awful - and I feel for the people who work there - including the video-journalists - who are just people trying to earn a living and make lemonade from Young Broadcasting's dried-out old lemons. It's real "on-the-job" training for many of the VJs who don't have journalistic credentials, and Young is willing to put a low quality product on the air hoping that the VJs improve their skills. That this "experiment" is going on at a major market TV station makes it even sadder. Generally, new broadcasters get to improve their skills working at small market stations while they gain experience and hope to break into big-time major markets. I spend time with friends in Redding and watch local news there -the quality of the reporting is usually superior to KRON's - and the reporters there are young broadcasters just out of college, probably making $10 an hour. If MyNetwork doesn't work for KRON, maybe Young will finally give up and sell it (for a major loss) to another company with real standards, so some quality local programming can be produced without the huge-debt burden. We can hope, anyway.
