KRON - For Sale?

From NAB Newsbriefs...

"Young Broadcasting is more than ready to sell its San Francisco MyNetworkTV affiliate KRON, whose sales fell 15% in the second quarter, because it is apparently holding down the company's stock price, ...."

"More than ready," huh?

More enough to drop the asking price from that $750 mill they lost the sale to NBC over? Time is a great motivator, isn't it?

Whatcha think, Llew?

I think Young Broadcasting had better be thinking "fire sale prices." If KRON is really dragging their stock price down that much, maybe they're ready to deal.

Who would want it now? They would have to start from scratch, buying series & talent. The young bros are blowing smoke up ----

This is a real sad thing to see happen here in the Bay Area but the TV industry is very unpredictable. What I think will happen is FOX may buy it. The MYTV affiliation will go to KTVU or KBWB. The property at VanNess will be sold off and FOX will end up either building a new station or taking over a newer facility.

I see two potential buyers.

1. FOX - (Since it is the largest market without an O&O).
2. Tribune - Same thing as #1, even Tribune is no longer selling out their property after Sam Zell brought the remainder of the company.

Off the wall, Young broadcasting is stupid for buying out KRON for $750 million, if they knew that they'll loose the NBC affiliation to KNTV, then they should not buy in the first place.

E-Dawg:

Young Broadcasting to seel KRON, hmm lets see

FOX- pretty good idea, however could they risk p'ing off Cox Enterprizes and leave KTVU adrift ?

Tribune- Maybe...

Hearst-Argyle..Gannett...

Is KBWB still for sale, or is Granite hanging on to it? I can FOX buying KRON, because KTVU had been independent for thirty something years. Good branding helps.

Well KRON was worth a lot while it was NBC, apparently Young thought NBC wouldn't be able to shift KNTV north.

I doubt Tribune would be interested in buying, here in Chicago we are still getting reports of how much trouble the deal is and the FCC is going to require them to spin off their papers and such, most likely, so even with that the deal is not finished, though likely will go through.

FOX on KTVU is very strong, and COX wouldn't be a good person to fight with. But if FOX did get KRON what's left for KTVU steal the CW if possible? They'd be better off on their own then with MyTV but who knows if the programs won't cost them.

The biggest question is how big of a loss will Young take for KRON? And with Digital only a year and a half away how much better will the VHF position be for a network?

The possibility of Fox buying KRON has been discussed before. While "Fox 4" does have a nice ring to it, I don't think so. From what I understand, News Corp has been selling stations lately, I don't think they're interested in acquiring any new ones. As an outsider, I've noticed that all the media corporations now seem perfectly comfortable sharing content with direct competitors. Some examples - CBS producing sitcoms that run in NBC primetime. 20th Century Fox producing primetime shows for all of the networks. In LA, CBS bought KCAL 9, and there was all sorts of speculation that when the WB and UPN combined to make the CW, it would be aired on KCAL. That's what happened in SF, when KBWB lost out, and the CW went to CBS owned KBHK/44. Not so in LA - the former WB affiliate - Tribune owned KTLA 5 got the CW, and KCAL remained independent.

Final example - I took my kid to Universal Studios in LA last week - there are Nickolodeon tie-ins and attractions all over Universal. But NBC owns Universal, and CBS owns Nick. Obviously, the media giants do all of this because "synergy" is just good business. Fox doesn't need to spend a lot of money to buy KRON - they've done just fine with KTVU for years now.
