(KRON) Young Broadcasting

It's a compelling scenario, and from what others are saying, having the NBC signal back on 4 could be a slight advantage over 11 in terms of signal coverage. But I really can't see the plus side for NBC unless they could get KRON at such a low price that they can come out even financially (or close to it) after selling KSTS.

In an era of lower revenue for traditional network TV, not to mention a recession that has to be depressing advertising revenue, I can't see why NBC would want to spend good money to do this.

Of course, there will be a serious bump in advertising in the fall with all the presidential year political ads...

NBC wouldn't buy KRON in the scenario. KRON would go dark; NBC would just move KNTV's virtual channel and COL.

But as FightingIrish said, there's no way it will go dark.

If this happens, it is probable that NBC will attempt to move KNTV's virtual channel off 11 and cable position off 3, moving both to 4; and getting its COL changed to San Francisco; with the main studio in San Jose staying put as well as the SF bureau across from CBS.

FCC regulations mandate that the station currently known as KNTV remain on virtual channel 11 and the station currently known as KRON remain on virtual channel 4.

Now, if NBC owned both stations, they could change KNTV's call letters to KRON and KRON's call letters to KNTV at which time KNTV *would* become virtual channel 4. Different station as far as the FCC is concerned.

No city-of-license change would be necessary, as the new KNTV - currently known as KRON - is already licensed to SF. (though the new KRON - currently known as KNTV - would become a San Jose station, technically)

"It is Tuesday, April 22. Where is the big announcement?!"

I would say that I was truly SHOCKED that the announcement hasn't been made about a buyer for KRON...but somebody would fail to understand the sarcasm dripping from my keyboard, and go into a long explanation of all the reasons Young probably won't attract any buyers for a long time.

Since I'm one of a number of people who've already done that, I won't comment.

I'm guessing Young is being unrealistic with the selling price.

They probably want at least what they paid for it. Half of that would be too much. They destroyed anything of value there.

Pardon me...that's the second time I've had a brain hiccup and hit the post button before leaving a comment.

I doubt even Young is delusional enough to think anybody will offer them what they paid for KRON. Even though it was a valuable property at the time, Young paid WAY too much. If you remember, NBC really really REALLY wanted KRON for an O&O, but Young outbid even NBC!

Young should have taken the network up on their subsequent offer some months later to buy KRON before they bought KNTV, but Young was not yet convinced they were in trouble.

The question is, how LOW are they willing to go NOW to unload the place.
