I doubt if KROQ would have ever played Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire or Death Cab For Cutie had it not been for Indie.
Someone earlier said Indie plays a bunch of acts that couldn't sell out a church. Not true, at least in L.A. those acts draw very well.
Or She Wants Revenge, Arctic Monkeys, Wolfmother, The Shins, as well. The thing is, although because of its signal it was never going to beat KROQ, it certainly provided an interesting ALTERNATIVE to them in some parts of the metro. Sadly, since about this time last year, something has happened, seems like Jonesy's Jukebox has lost its buzz, the Morning show is inferior to the original one they had, and the station has steadily transformed its programming to be just like every other modern rock station out there. So now, they've just become a diluted KROQ, and thats not worth much at all.
Well.....they did bring in that guy from Boston's WFNX, a standard-issue snoresville modern rocker. Maybe that explains the "diluted" playlist. But it's still a far cry from crapola KROQ. Indie still plays quality music, undiscovered music, and none of the brain-dead stuff.
While you're on breaking new artists, you can also take note that Indie played American Idiot (Green Day) for months while KROQ ignored it. Finally, when the album took off, and even KIIS was playing it, KROQ jumped on the bandwagon and started playing Green Day non-stop.
But the regular playlist is not what makes Indie great anyway. (Mostly automated or god-awful TK playing a small playlist.) It's the specialty shows. Maybe Jonsey's buzz is less....not sure how to measure buzz. But the current morning show is GREAT. Low-key, intelligent, fun, with actual music. The news woman is a bit loud-mouthed, better suited to some more commercial outlet. And the other shows are still really creative and adventurous.
But none of this matters, ratings-wise. Indie's continued existence is a real puzzle. A pleasant one, though!
