Ted Hilrey Lumpkin died on February 20, 2003. Born June 16, 1931 in Jackson, MS, he attended American University in Washington, D.C. while working for the FBI. He joined the Air Force during the Korean War and while on Guam he and a friend, in their spare time, began the first radio station on Guam, still in operation today. Thus began his lifetime broadcasting career which included disc-jockey, announcer, newsman, weather caster, his own TV talk show, and announcing the play-by-play for the professional Memphis Wings Hockey Team, where he announced the first hockey game he ever attended and earned himself a 2-page article in the "Radio/TV Mirror" national magazine. He also became Public Relations Director for the Wings, later coming to Houston, eventually retiring as Vice President and Sales Manager for KPRC Radio.
