KRTH 1001 Song Weekend

Nice to hear yet another huge themed weekend on KRTH, this one featuring 1001 of their greatest hits without repetition. They played songs that you normally will not hear on regular rotation, such as, "Stairway to Heaven", "Billy Jean" and some late 50's classics. Several other 80's hits were featured too, but mainly 60's and 70's. The only complaint is that they could of filled the list with more hits from the mid 70's, instead of playing practically every Beatles song that existed!! I mean, did "Lovely Rita" ever chart?? Not on the Billboard Hot 100. Otherwise, a great way to Ring in the New Year!! Check out the list of this countdown on the KRTH website, pretty interesting!! Keep it up.

Well, that's a nice change.

In the past it would have been 101 of their greatest hits...with repetition.

I used to love it when they'd do an "All My Guy Weekend." ;D

Actually 7.6% of the countdown or 76 Beatles songs out of 1001 were counted off their list. Lots of non-charting songs were included.

It would be interesting to know how many of those 76 titles were played Sunday morning and early afternoon. It has seemed to me that stations programming against the popular Beatle shows on Sunday morning seem to include more Beatle titles than at other times.

I do realize that KRTH has it's own Beatles program, but it is not nearly as long as Chris Carter's show on KLOS and, based on my own listening over the years, I seem to notice more Beatle titles during that time when their own show is not on but another stations is (KCSN also has a nice Beatles program as well). Of course my theory is that they are hoping someone looking for a Beatles show will hear a Beatles tune and just stop there, not realizing (at least right away) that even though a Beatles song is on, it is not really the show they were looking for.

Actually, looking at the list given on KRTH's website..the Beatle songs were scattered and played every so often. I am not sure what part of the list/countdown actually played Sunday morning. The countdown lasted throughout New Year's Weekend to New Year's Day. 76 songs out of 1001 seems excessive, considering how many other oldies artists & songs are out there. They should have called it "1001 Greatest Hits of All-Time, featuring the Beatles Weekend". Don't get me wrong, I love the Beatles music....just too-many other artists and songs were omitted from this otherwise, incredible countdown.

Yeah excessive. The Beatles weren't any bigger than White Plains or Starland Vocal Band or any other of those great mid-70's acts we don't get enough of....right? haha

The 1001 Countdown was really quite a shock. A fantastic one.

To hear "Good Timin'", "Splish Splash", "It Never Rains in Southern California,", "Don't Be Cruel", "Little Latin Lupe Lu," so many others. What a treat. And they really tried to pump up the excitement level with callers trying to guess #1, little stories about certain songs, etc. They billed it as the biggest LA countdown of all time, and I think that is accurate. I guess KLSX's Top 971 Countdown comes close.

Sadly, once the countdown was over, it was back to normal - i.e. boring, and nothing before 1964 permitted except Tequila.

As for the Beatles, I actually don't think KRTH would take the time to plot out the countdown list to compete against KLOS. You're giving them WAY too much credit. I think Jack and KOST are who they're after more than KLOS in the ratings wars anyway.

In fact, KRTH's Beatle show ends right when KLOS' starts, so it's easy to listen to both shows if you're wanting a mega dose of Sunday Beatles. The real overlap is between KLOS and KCSN.

Anyway....KRTH....PLEASE do some more cool countdowns and play some more diverse music on a regular basis!

Yeah, some countdown shows like the ones they did in the early 80's would be nice. Remember the "Number Ones Music Weekend" around Labor Day Weekend. They would play every song that peaked at #1, in chrono order, beginning in 1955 to current...songs that peaked at #1 on the KHJ radio charts. It was fascinating to hear!!!!! The 1001 hits weekend is a start, but we need more, like the older K-Earth 101 that we ALL remember.

I would LOVE that #1 idea.

They've had a few good theme weekends since Jhani took over: the triple "B" weekend (Beatles, Bee Gees, Beach Boys, all in a row), the surfing/beach weekend (missed that, but heard about it,) and the no-repeat weekend.

Usually, though, it's things like the "70's Sampler" weekend, which simply means two ordinary 70s songs in a row. Or, the 60s/70s weekend, which is a 60s song followed by a 70s song. (Essentially, the normal format.) Or the "Good Time Oldies" weekend - not sure what that even is.

Tons of potential for K-Earth. I've heard PPM rewards lengthier listening, so hopefully there will be less "ADD" style programming and the station will give people a reason to tune in on purpose. Would it kill them to do some special shows like WCBS?

I think "Goodtime Oldies Weekend" is the same old music, just arranged differently..just like any other day. Been hearing selected 80's hits on KRTH too, like: "Hungry Eyes", "I Can Dream About You", "Carribean Queen" and "Gypsy", mixed with the usual 60's & 70's playlist. 80's music is getting to the point where it can be called oldies too. I mean, the hits of 1982 are now 26 years old!! Bring them on!
