KRTH 1962 to 1990 Segue

KRTH just went from playing 1962's Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen by Neil Sedaka to 1990s Come Back To Me by Janet Jackson.

While I'm glad to see KRTH doing good in the ratings and playing a variety of music, this segue just didn't sound right.
Going from bouncy early 1960s pop to slick 1990s ballad made me change the dial.

Perhaps if they had played Neil Sedaka and then a more upbeat Jackson Jackson song like What Have You Done For Me Lately then it would have sounded better.

1990s overly produced synthesized ballads just don't sound right on KRTH.

Brian, that sounds like a DJ error. Was there a jingle between the two or did the airguy talk over Janet's intro? Since you switched stations during the Jackson number, it would have been helpful to know what the NEXT song played was. Most oldies stations use pretty stringent Selector rules for their music programming (like no jump of 2 or more decades, no back-to-back British Invasion songs and the like.) Sounds to me like someone hit the wrong Audiovault button. It happens to the best of them...

Sounds like a library from a sister station got mingled (mashed?) It's been known to happen, although rarely. BTW, off-topic, "DJ Error" struck me as a character name or wacky jock name for an CHR, Alternative or Active Rock jock.

That's likely the best explanation. Some stations use unique prefixes or numeric start numbers for cuts for each station on a system, and a single letter or number puts a song in the wrong place.

Hey Guys:

Sounds like to me the station was automated during that time cause I don't think KRTH is that stupid to play a song from 1990.

If it was a live jock he or she would have caught it an deleted it.

We used to have that happen with our classic rock sister station when there songs got mixed up with ours. But at least we had live jocks to fix the problem before it got played.

Always hated automation!! And I always will!!

P.S Hey David where have you been??

Actually, you may be forgetting that KRTH plays newer songs. They bill them as "Today's Oldies". Most are from the 80's but Kaye has added some early 90's songs as well. This could have been one of those.

I like many trainwrecks, but that sounds like one I would not enjoy.

I think the problem is that one is peppy-schmaltzy, and the next is ballad-schmaltzy.

A good rule is never play one schmaltzy into another.

Most likely not an error. I've noticed this often on WCBS-FM, which I stream at work. I remember hearing "Runaround Sue" which I think is early 60s into The Cars "Magic" which is early 80s. Might sound like a trainwreck to some, but I like it.
