KRTH Memories

O

oldies17

Guest
I was in radio back in the early 90's at KWVE, San Clemente (Christian Praise and Worship Music station), but my main hobby as a radio listener were oldies stations locally, and what they were playing. KRTH back in the early to mid 80's had a MUCH bigger playlist than they have today. They used to program themed weekends then and man, was it fun to listen to back then. Every so often, KRTH 101 would play that late 70's hit song or even a current 1983 or 1984 song, mixed with their regular oldies.

KRTH used to play amazing things on weekends, such as an A-Z music weekend during Memorial Day Weekend, or the Firecracker 300 on the 4th of July.."Stairway to Heaven" or "Hey Jude" were always the number one song voted by listeners back then. (YES..KRTH played "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin, back in 1985). The grand-daddy of all themed weekends came during Labor Day weekends, in which KRTH played EVERY song to hit number one in L.A. (based on KHJ and other radio charts) from 1955 through the early 80's (to 1985)in chronological order..

By Saturday night of Labor Day weekend, KRTH would be playing the late 70's..heading to the 80's by late night..then starting over in 1955 and doing it over again and ending the #1 music weekend by late Monday night!! KRTH even did the number 2's the weekend before..GREAT STUFF!!!!! I hope KRTH returns to those days where huge playlists once ruled and song requests were seriously taken. Maybe Jhadi Kaye will do just that!!!! and one more thing...Bring back the number ones!!!!!!!
______________
Oldies will always be Number ONE!!

Welcome new Poster!. This memory belongs on the L.A. Board. KRTH FM had a 5000 Title play list in the mid 80's, although they never really utilized more than a tenth of it. They did play some currents for a while, but I thought it was way before 1984. Reel Radio has a Brother John Air check from 1981, and although it is painful to listen too, he was the top man at AM 930 KRTH AM, Smokin' Oldies. In fact I ran the Smokin' Oldies & produced the Saturday night all request show with Michael Moore 3 weeks a Month. The other week was the Super 60's Weekend with Mr. Rock & Roll©, long live his horrible soul.

So Scott I take it you're not a Rick Dees or Brian Beirn fan eh? :>)
BTW I dug Smokin Oldies on 930. Ah those were the days

Re: KRTH Memories...A Question

Did you listen to KCBS-FM in the early nineties when they played oldies?

If you did, who did you like more? I made a few visits to Southern California when KCBS-FM played oldies and I liked them better. The reason? A larger playlist and more jingles. I even managed to get a (K) CBS-FM shirt. I also recorded about 45 minutes of them in the morning in 1993.

"The Boss is back!" I was surprised to hear oldies on 930 AM during one visit to LA. The old KHJ frequency. Too bad it did not last.

I wish I could have had you down to 5901 Venice during the last days of RKO. Best Studios in town, and the Smokin' Oldies were fun to perform. I filled in one Week as Brother John right after Dave Hull's morning show. He was the ultimate professional. Pulled all my Music, Commercials, and Brother John Voice Tracks for my 4 hour shift, I'll never forget that!.

No working with Rick Dees was not a pleasure by any means. However I could wander down the hall, and have a half hour quality conversation with Gary Owens and forget about the real egocentric Dees. In fact it's the older guys in the business that were the best. Whittinghill for example, what a wonderful man. Oh, and Brother John seemed really nice. He didn't talk much, because of his previous stroke, but you could tell the presence of greatness in the room. Brian Beirne at KRTH actually thought he WAS Mr. Rock & Roll. When they trained me to run K-EARTH 101, he asked if I could be trained in the Hallway. I'll never forget that remark, in fact I went right up to the P.D. Phil Hall and told him what I thought of that comment!.

Wasn't it KODJ?

If you didn't tune into the Eleven Ten, Kr-LA during that time period, you wouldn't know what you ever missed. Actually KKHR/KODJ & a good chunk of the Arrow (KCBS) blew chunks. Mellow Sounds is where they excelled!

If you listened to a KRTH Super Sixties Weekend in the eighties you would have heard the following lost oldies:

Will You Be Staying After Sunday...Peppermint Rainbow
Roses and Rainbows...Danny Hutton
Sweet Cream Ladies...Box Tops
Reach Out in the Darkness...Friend and Lover
Time Has Come Today...Chambers Bros.
Younger Girl...Lovin' Spoonful
Black Pearl...Sonny Charles and the Checkmates LTD
White Bird...It's a Beautiful Day
Words...Monkees
Morning Girl...Neon Philharmonic
Set Me Free...Kinks
Seven and Seven Is...Love

How many others can we name?

93.1 call letter/format history

There was a period when the call letters were KCBS-FM and the station played Oldies as "CBS FM".

KNX-FM (simulcasting KNX/1070) 1948-1971
KNX-FM (mellow rock) 1971-1983
KKHR (top-40) 1983-1986
KNX-FM 1986-1989
KODJ (oldies) 1989-1991
KCBS-FM (oldies "CBS FM") 1991-1992
KCBS-FM (classic rock "Arrow 93") 1992-2005
KCBS-FM (variety hits "Jack") 2005-present
______________

Re: 93.1 call letter/format history

Yes. CBS Inc was trying to duplicate their NYC success in Southern California.
I have an aircheck and a shirt from the oldies station KCBS-FM.

Actually, KRTH was my station of choice back in the 80's and early 90's..before they went into the tight playlist cycle..So I really only remembered KCBS-FM as either Arrow 93 (Classic Rock) or the current JACK format..

I had to try other oldies stations like KOLA 99.9 and KOOL 99.3 for better variety.

By the way..since I reside in Colorado..and KRTH does not stream yet, have they expanded their playlist a bit yet, since Kaye took over?? Besides the long versions of "Black Magic Woman" and "Light My Fire"..what other hits are they playing curently that were not on the playlists back in June 2005, when I moved?

Are they planning themed weekends again, like the number ones??

I actually called in and requested "Come Sail Away" by Styx in early 1985 or late 1984..and they played it within 30 minutes...In fact, I remember a jingle (like a barking dog??) they would mix in songs..throughout the request show...

Brother John was on Sunday nights?? How about "Souveniers of the 70's weekend"?
60's at 6 and 70's at 7.

I have a reel to reel copy of Jonathan & Steve Scott doing the "Runners up of classic rock and roll weekend" in 1986 (#2's of 1977 through 1979), I have recorded..mainly just the music..but some KRTH jingles of that themed weekend between songs and some of the voices as well..but 99% music!!

I'm pretty sure it's 1986..because in 1985..KRTH played #1's and 2's through 1985. In 1986, they only played #1's and #2's to 1979.

Sounds great...heard it yesterday!!!

Some the songs played on KRTH, that are on this tape are: "Short People", "Nobody does it better", "Boogie Nights", "Gonna Fly Now - Theme from Rocky", "Just the Way You Are", "Get Off", "A Little More Love", "Tragedy", and "All My Love" (Led Zepellin), "Cruisin" and a whole lot more! (1.5 hrs long)

Steve Scott mentions "Well obviously, it's not a no Bee Gees weekend is it,(giggle) but that's not very likely when you're doing the Runners up of classic rock and roll of 1979" after playing "Tragedy"...Pretty funny stuff!!

It's recorded on 7" reel on Ampex 642 tape.
______________

Didn't the Barking Dogs have a seasonal hit with Jingle Bells?. If you say they played Styx, then you must have been right. My Radio was fixed on 106.7 for the decade of the Eighties!.

> Brother John was on Sunday nights??

Actually Brother John did his "Heaven is in your Mind" show on 101 FM Sunday Nights. These were repeats from his pre Stroke days. And who can forget Vivian Porter's fine public affairs programs, and that Fernando fella, who also did public affairs shows for KHJ TV, Channel 9, an RKO Television Station. And finally, let us not forget "Ask the Professor"!

I am not sure if these were the same barking dogs that were seasonal or just some funny sound effect that was added to the request show..or even if they were dogs..it just sounded like them..sort of a funny sound effect.

Do you remember a morning show on KRTH?? All I recall was the phrase "UPDATING" would be inserted at times during this show..probably in the late 80's??

Yes, the Singing Dogs. They also had another song called Hot Dog Boogie. I don't think it charted. That was around 1971. WABC played Jingle Bells by them.

KRTH Memories of Sunday mornings

> And finally, let us not forget "Ask the
> Professor"!

Which KRTH unceremoniously dumped from their schedule three years ago. When I called Jay "Coff-FAAAY" to complain, he said it was a corporate mandate to have all non-paid weekend programming be locally produced. Hence "The Lutheran Hour" still airs, but not the University of Detroit.

Thankfully, within the past year the U of D has made the show available via MP3 on their website. And, during the summer months, they post repeats of old shows with former moderator Edwin DeWindt and the late Professor George Pickering.
______________

I want KRTH to bring back their pre-Beatles stuff, only for variety's sake. I don't give a flying (expletive) about those stupid, biased advertisers. In fact, there is an AM oldies station in Ventura, CA, that plays obscure oldies, even stuff that I can't remember ever hearing on KRTH. That station is KVEN-AM 1450, their moniker being "The Boomer." I have read that it is one of the most profitable AM oldies stations. It even broadcasts Dodger games during baseball season. It only broadcasts at 1,000 watts, so you can only get it in L.A., especially the West San Fernando Valley, with a car radio, or any kind of radio with a good AM antenna. Anyone here ever heard of that station?

Re: The Boomer

Sure I have. I am in a discussion group where a few of the guys are great fans of The Boomer and love their music selection. I have not heard that they make a lot of money.

Too bad they do not stream.

KVEN is the lowest-billing station of a cluster which includes both the Oxnard-Ventura and Santa Barbara markets, seven stations in total. It is the only AM in the cluster.

They are only live 6am-noon and 3-7pm on weekdays. The rest of the time is either syndicated programming or automation.

The station is owned by Cumulus.
______________

I was stationed out in Twentynine Palms in 1986. Down in the valley where 29 is, you couldn't get any LA FM's, except the then KNOB Long Beach, which must've thrown a lobe out that way. So, out in the desert, it was XETRA (69 XTRA Gold) Tijuana, 1110 KRLA (on the 50Kw daytime signal only), and Smokin' Oldies AM 930, KRTH (at the time I had no clue this was a vestige of the legendary KHJ!). At night, KRTH 930 duked it out with KOOL in Phoenix.

I always listened to K-earth 101 whenever I was in range of the signal. It was an awesome oldies station back then. Weekends always seemed to have some sort of specialty theme. I spent most weekends back then in the SF Valley, so 101.1 was locked on my radio. The station is a shell of what it once was, but it's still better than CBS's WOGL in Philly, which is way too Motown/soul.
