Working with Rick Dees

May I gently ask why working with Rick was so difficult?

In 1993, KHJ was good, but I loved KOOL Gold 960. Well, they played almost all pre-Beatles oldies, but they dug down deep and played some obscure gems. I was able to get them here, because they simulcasted on about one hundred stations.

I recall being told by a friend that Brian when he was here in Sacramento at KXOA 107.9 had an album collection of at least 11,000 and that was back in the early 70's. I can only imagine how many that has grown to now. He called himself
Mr. Rock and Roll back then too. My friend said he was a pain back then too!
 
I'm enjoying reading the posts about KRTH-AM/FM in the 80's. Brother John was a gentleman, While Brian-Mr Rock & Roll was a strange one. I never talked to him just nodded passing him in the hall. Phil Hall who was P.D. then asked me to go have a beer with Brian as Brians feelings were hurt because I never talked to him. I wouldn't do it and told Phil that Brian thought Elvis was in the room with him when he played an Elvis cut...The guy was to weird for me. I did the all request show from 8 till Midnight on the AM for about 10 months and then quit as V/O work was paying much more. Phil was pissed at me for leaving but we made up several years later and we are still in contact today. Phil did a great job with KRTH and had numbers in the 4's. Thanks for the memories!

Thanks for the info!! For some reason, I thought KOOL was on 930. My feeble brain recalls hearing the two of em duking it out at 4 AM while I was on my way to the base....but I was probably just dialing around, like a good radio geek does in the middle of the night!

KOOL AM gave away a classic car a month. Cars were from 1957-1965. I forgot how to win. It was something like, being the 96th caller or writing to us in 96 words or less why you want to win the car. They had the 96 stuck in there somewhere.

Their 800 request line also ended with 9696. But I forget such things too.

Mike, I admire your honesty! Mr. Rock & Roll©, the beloved crown jewel of the 101 Team was a nasty guy. Someone here wanted me to explain my similar feelings on Rick Dees, it's not going to happen. Did you ever work with the Coach, Charly Wright?. Now their was a man who appeared unfriendly, yet was very sick, and a really great guy. And what can be said about Brother John, the legend. And I'll not forget meeting you at 5901 too in 1986, after you left and were just back as a visitor, with one of those welcome anytime passes good at all RKO Stations Nationwide!

I worked with Charly Wright at KIIS. Charly was a stone pro, serious but a good man and easy to work with. So was Liz Fulton. Liz was rough around the edges, hard living but she was excellent on air. Liked them both alot. Just heard awhile back that Liz passed away to as did Ron Foster who was there at the time.(Ron was also a good guy). Seems the whole KIIS news department from that period has died.
I was at KIIS when Rick was hired. He did'nt do much in the ratings until Gerry Defran came in as the P.D. and Wally Clark as the G.M. They made Rick. Gave him the budget and every tool possible (every jocks dream) As the ratings grew so did his ego. I never participated in the Dee's parties or ego games so I had no problem with him but I know many who did. When I left KIIS and went to KLAC I wished him well and he looked surprised. I meant it as we never had any problems. Thanks Again for the memories!

Oh, you mean 1983. By 86 the station was Smokin' as AM 930 KRTH, and then went Spanish

Anyone know what "rare" music is KRTH playing these days, with Kaye at the helm?? Live in Colorado now and KRTH does not stream yet.

Rare..meaning anything besides their 250 songs that they have burned out since 1986.

I heard about Selena and the long versions of "Light My Fire" and "Black Magic Woman"

Any 80's, More 70's??

You have never replied as to why working with Rick Dees was
difficult. It makes me wonder about your character, sir.

"Why was it difficult to work with Rick Dees"
This is a legitimate question that should not
be ignored...
