KRTH playing 2004 music!

Here we go again, headed for another of your circular discussions and arguments, oldies ...

Nope. Never assume. But......aren't you(to some extent) and Big A countering as well? It's a two way street.

Now, back to the 2004 song discussions.

Nope. Never assume. But......aren't you(to some extent) and Big A countering as well? It's a two way street.

Only to the extent that you keep posting the same impossible demands, sir. After this long, we dare not leave your arguments unchallenged or it would give the impression that we now agree with you. Can't have that.

To PTBoardOp (and everyone else with a similar mindset): Stop blaming consultants for everything you think is wrong with radio. If we weren't around to keep radio viable in the changing face of media and the biases of the advertising community, everything would have devolved to religious and ethnic programming by now.

???

I was giving consultants credit for creating "Classic Hits" as a format. Nothing for you to be offended by.

"It's My Life" from '04 has aired once again, today at 3:02pm, so for now it's on regular rotation at KRTH. Positioning it at early drive time home will enable more to hear this song and give their impressions on this change.

What demands????? Jeez, lighten up. Not posting anything as to what I used to post. Obviously you have not taken that into account, Sir. I wanted this post to remain on topic that I initiated and others gave their opinions on other things and I post a thought and you jump the gun. Give me a break!

It's not really a change. If they played Luke Bryan, that would be a change.

Well country, yes. I'm mentioning that a recent-current mixed with classics from the 70's and 80's should be somewhat noticeable and "new" to their listeners. K-Earth playing 2000's music now, type reactions from their listeners. Heck, it took me by surprise.

There are some pretty good songs from 2001 that should test well.

A few that come to mind:

All For You - Janet Jackson
Fallin' - Alicia Keys
Butterfly - Crazy Town
It Wasn't Me - Shaggy
Hit 'Em Up Style - Blu Cantrell
Turn Off the Light - Nelly Furtado
Get the Party Started - Pink
Drops of Jupiter - Train
If You're Gone - Matchbox 20
Whenever, Wherever - Shakira
Way You Love Me - Faith Hill
I'm Like A Bird - Nelly Furtado
You Rock My World - Michael Jackson
When It's Over - Sugar Ray
Superman (It's Not Easy) - Five For Fighting

But then you risk sounding like KBIG or some other A/C
For the most part, this is a pretty good list. Crazytown's song was too bad to be awesomely bad and Superman just seems to be too light for an upbeat Classic Hits station. If I may add a few titles to your list (I was in junior high):
Angel- Shaggy
Survivor- Destiny's Child
Hanging by a Moment- Lifehouse
Lady Marmalade- every female solo singer that was relevant, lol
Nelly- Ride Wit Me (a pretty standard hip pop song, see Hot In Herre from '02)
Dido- Thank You
Lenny Kravitz- Again
And one for the road....
Everclear- Brown Eyed Girl..... :)

Good additions, although personally I dislike "Survivor" with a passion! The song is just too annoying and sung badly, especially the last 25 seconds or so. The rest look good. Didn't know Everclear did "Brown Eyed Girl". Maybe KRTH will someday replace the original, but I'm guessing....most likely not!

Actually, playing it from 10 AM to 3 PM would get more listeners.

Classic Hits was not created by consultants. It is just a natural evolution of a format that wants to continue to appeal to the same demos... so they flush the older music and add newer stuff.

Of course, this change was kick-started by the guys in sales and management who could no longer sell 60's based oldies.

Classic Hits was not created by consultants.

Some examples of formats created by consultants: Movin,' Jack, and Hot Hits. These were very narrowly defined formats with specific song lists and jingle packages.

Classic Hits is a broad format that differs from station to station, with different jingles, music lists, and other presentation elements. AND most importantly, the name is not service marked by anyone.

But why splatter the KRTH airwaves with 11-year-old music? No Doubt's "It's My Life" belongs on a station like KOST, KBIG or KCBS/Jack. Not on a so-called "Classic Hits" station. I'd rather have K-Earth play the ORIGINAL version of that song by Talk Talk, from about 1984. I enjoy that version as well.

As of 2015, classic hits should = 1970-1989 majority. Some 60s. Nothing after 1989. As for even 90s music, that can come in about 2019 or 2020. Way too early for "Smooth" Santana, and outrageously early for "It's My Life" No Doubt.
Just wait until 2016. KRTH will air "Dynamite" Taio Cruz, "Sexyback" Justin Timberlake, "Hot n Cold" Katy Perry, "Bye Bye Bye" N-Sync, and "Bad Romance" Lady Gaga. Then you'll hear some Irish guy named Van Morrison belt out "our hearts a-thumping, And you, my brown-eyed girl"...

Makes me so glad for stations like Kool 107.1 in Deer Park, WA. I heard some great stuff on that station. Barry Mann's "Who Put the Bomp." Johnny Rivers' "Summer Rain." etc etc. Rare oldies from about 1955-1990.

Nope. As I said just....yesterday:

(screen goes all wavy, harp music plays)

...the audience doesn't (for the most part) know or care the year....and doesn't have a pre-conceived notion about KRTH playing years....they want KRTH to play music they like that isn't a current hit.

Says you. KRTH seems to be doing spectacularly well since abandoning your your definition of what classic hits should be.

If this is going to be a repetition of the same points of view by oldies76 that caused previous KRTH threads to be closed, this one will be closed as well.
This site is about radio. Radio is for the masses. It is not tailored for the tastes of a single listener.

With all due respect Frankberry, there has been no repetition on my part as compared to any of the other threads. This thread is simply about KRTH radio introducing 2000's music for the first time that I introduced with NO intention of taking it to "circular arguments" as another poster indicated. I'd like this to continue simply being a discussion of KRTH playing newer music, with enthusiasts and the professionals alike in a civilized manner.

I realize KRTH is a hot topic, but I believe I'm being much more careful this time around.

To that point, shouldn't it be what the listeners (collectively, not person by person) say it is? Same goes for the discussions around how adult contemporary isn't adult contemporary etc. If "It's my Life" works for the audience, where's the problem?
