KRTH Themed Weekends

It's nice to hear that KRTH is having some themed weekends lately, such as the Labor Day A to Z weekend. They also did the Firecracker 400 this year. This goes back to the 1980's KRTH, which also had themed weekends. Back then, KRTH offered "The Souveniers of the 70's Weekend", the "Top 10 Weekend" during New Year's Day and the "Number Ones Weekend" during Labor Day Weekend. The Number Ones, based on KHJ charts and others, was a very unique weekend. You would hear music that normally would not be heard any other time of the year. The weekend before Labor Day, you'd hear the #2's (runners up of rock and roll weekend) based on KHJ charts.

KRTH should bring back the Ones and Twos again...If I recall, their slogan back then was "A Southern California Tradition"..playing every number one single from 1955 through 1985!! It was a blast back then!!

Let's begin a new tradition, Jhani Kaye!!

I sure do miss those themed weekends KRTH would do in the eighties. You would hear a lot of mid charting obscurities like "Younger Girl" by the Lovin' Spoonful, "Time Has Come Today" by the Chambers Bros., "Do I Love You" by the Ronettes, "Sweet Cream Ladies" by the Box Tops, and "White Bird" by It's a Beautiful Day.

Some of the themed weekends KRTH has done recently are definitely an improvement over the Phillips/Coffey eras. I liked their beach music weekend at the beginning of summer where they played rarities like "Darlin" and "I Can Hear Music" by The Beach Boys, "Sidewalk Surfin'" by Jan and Dean and "I Live for the Sun" by the Sunrays. A few weeks ago they played "Nothin' But a Heartache" by the Flirtations. Talk about a forgotten favorite!

I disagree about the A-Z weekend. It was not good. I turned it on about 4 hours in and they were already on the H"s. WOGL's was much better. It had at least twice as many songs and lots of rarities. KLOS does the best A-Z and it lasts about a week.

Yeah, the A-Z weekend was short and basically was a re-grouping of the songs they already play on a daily basis. To do it right, would require at least 750 songs, spread over 3-5 days..and more obscurities, like the themed weekends of the old KRTH, back in the day!! At least KRTH is playing more 70's now, than they used to, in the last 20 years or so.

Yes, they are playing more 70's. However I could do without so much "Play That Funky Music" and "Bennie and the Jets".

They're better than "My Guy" or "Dancin' in the Streets" every 3 hours....at least for now.

'Dancin' in the Streets' is always good on K-Earth. Wasn't that the first song played at 'Boss Radio 93/KHJ' back in the day?

As a long-time KRTH listener (from 1976 on), it's my opinion that the station now sounds better than it has for years, since Phil Hall left in the early '90's. Jay Coffey, while a great jock that I always enjoyed listening to, was not a great PD and succumbed to corporate programmers in his choice of formatics and music.

I'll be the first to say that I had my doubts about Jhani taking the reins; I feared he was going to blow up the station and make it "KBIG-2", but he has done a magnificent job of recapturing the spirit and feel of classic K-Earth.

There are still a few rough edges (Joshua Escandon drives me buggy with his formula raps and sloppy board work), and the music could still be a tad deeper, but overall the station stands head and shoulders taller than it did two years ago. And the themed weekends are much better than they were during Jay's tenure (where one could regularly hear Charlie Tuna intone "It's a Women of Rock Weekend!" followed by - what else - "My Guy").

I think the powers that be knew that something had to be done and Kaye's stature in the industry gave the CBS brass enough confidence to give Kaye the freedom to make the changes that were needed with the music.

You are ENTIRELY correct with regard to Escandon. He sounds out of place on KRTH. He's aweful. For me the ultimate scenario would be to remove Escandon and replace him with Gary Bryan thus opening mornings for Charlie Tuna. By the way, Charlie Van Dyke was and still is the image voice. Tuna to my knowledge hasn't worked at KRTH before...

Huh! I thought Charlie was doing the imaging. Shows what I know ;)

As others have posted, Charlie would see anything but mornings as beneath him, but Gary Bryan sounds pretty dang good in AM. I wouldn't move him out.
