krtx upgrade

Radio Alelua has announced that they have placed a petition for an upgrade to 980 am.

Really, that's how they described it? For the record it's not a "petition" but an application to increase their daytime power and it was accepted for filing by the FCC back on April 3rd.

KRTX wants to move their daytime facilities to the nighttime site and increase power from 1,000 watts non-directional to 5,000 watts with the same pattern they use at night. The trouble with that is the nighttime site is located way out west (north of I-10 between Katy and Brookshire) and they still have to afford adjacent-channel protection to 990 over in Beaumont; most of the signal is concentrated toward the southeast to cover their community of license, Rosenburg-Richmond. Sure, it would be an upgrade, but not really that impressive overall.

Since he charges to grant wishes for his listeners/followers, shouldn't his listeners charge to grant his wish for a bigger stick?

I guess they're not going to wait for approval. KRTX has been booming into North Houston since around 4am, and most likely never powered down last evening. Tsk, tsk, Mr. Bernal. I am going to check it again tonight.

990 in Beaumont is barely listenable even in the city of Beaumont due to the poor engineering practices of its owner. I'm not sure why it is even on the air.

If you checked the FCC database, you'd see that KRTX is authorized 1 kw daytime, 4 kw nighttime from two different sites. There's no "powering down" at night for KRTX. The CP application simply moves the entire operation to their night site in Katy, 5kw day, 4kw night, same pattern, no changes to the operation (other than the site change).

Thank you, tuner, I am aware of the 4kw that KRTX has at night with its SE lobe towards Galveston. This is my point. I can not recall an instance where KRTX was as clear as it has been these last couple of nights in far north Houston when it was still in Univision's possession. Forgive me for my poor choice of words. You are right they never "power down", only switch to a different directional lobe. When it's all said and done, KRTX is still more audible at night now, in far N. Houston than it has been before to the best of my knowledge.

Bernal, Villarreal, whatever. The result is the same. Another station in this market that is worthless.
