I'm a little partial on this one...
The first full book on KRWA (Now KHGG-FM as of Tuesday) as a sports format is not out yet... and I haven't heard the preliminary numbers.
Pharis Broadcasting has been well established on the local sports scene for well over a decade. You'll find all of the local high schools on the five stations.
KRWA now has three local shows (Morning Huddle, Noon Huddle Replay, and Sports In The Fort) compared to KTTG which has none. KRWA also has Fox Sports Radio which in my opinion is head and shoulders above the ESPN product. The simulcast puts a better signal into Fort Smith than KTTG, which is well over sixty miles away from downtown. Sports In The Fort is constantly being broadcast on location, and the station is bringing in great numbers revenue-wise. The phone calls are pretty consistent in afternoon drive, the remotes bring in a good number of listeners off the streets... but we will see how that translates in the first book.
KTTG simulcasts KREB 1190 in Fayetteville for the morning show with Bo Mattingly and Mike Irwin. They talk nothing but the Razorbacks, which is all that many care about. They have a good share of the sports listeners between 7 and 9. They have a huge advantage being established television personalities. That is to be expected. The show has been successful in the market from day one. The morning show is a good product.
Both stations carry Sportsrap. You can toss a coin as to what station the Fort Smith callers are listening on. Many of them have listened on 1580 for ten years now, and haven't changed their radios yet. KDYN in Ozark carries the show and also penetrates the market.
I would say just laying out both cases on the line.... If it comes down to a better job of being a Fort Smith sports station... it's KRWA hands down. Other than the legal ID and commercials, the only thing Fort Smith and KTTG have in common are talking the Razorbacks.
