KRWZ 950 Getting a Translator or Changing Frequencies?

Something strange is going on with this story about KRWZ 950 getting an FM Signal at 103.1. As reported on Radio-Info's News Page t said that Cruisin Oldies 960 would get a FM Translator to rebroadcast its programming on and this morning I saw a peice from Westword saying that the format is moving to 103.1 So I wonder if they are actually moving? http://blogs.westword.com/latestword/2010/11/cruisin_oldies_950_am_moving_to_1031_fm.php

Here's Radio-Info's story. http://www.radio-info.com/news/denv..._Extra_Nov_16_201011_16_2010&utm_medium=email

Re: KRWZ 950 Getting a Translator at 103.1

KRWZ is indeed staying at 950 they are just getting a translator at 103.1. Westword made a mistake but it has been corrected.

Strangely enough, I can't even get FM 103.1 yet I can get AM 950 from my home here in Englewood. This is a stark contrast to KCKK where I can't even get AM 1510 to save my life yet I can hear FM 93.7 CLEAR AS A BELL on my portable radio in living room (The clock radio in my bedroom still can't get 93.7 very well though, but still).

Considering how weak 103.1 & 1510 are as well as how poor 107.5 is doing, I think Lincoln Financial & Mile High Magazine would be better off doing the following.....

* Upgrading 93.7 to a FULL-POWER signal & move KCKK over there alone
* Move KRWZ from 950 to 107.5 & sell off 950 to whomever wants the frequency.

This way, two things happen.....

1) KCKK gets a halfway decent listenership to make it worthy of carrying live sporting events (Which are EXPEN$IVE to begin with, but even more so when they're on a station that's on a frequency which NO ONE CAN HEAR)

2) KRWZ gets a real audience to speak of (And KOOL 105 gets some serious COMPETITION)

Okay, that's three things but you get the picture.

Just my opinion. Thoughts?

Cheers :D

All good ideas, and your right 103.1 is a weak signal and I can't beleive that they are going to do that! What is the point on putting KRWZ on 103.1 anyways? Not everyone is going to be able to pick it up, and it is interesting that you meantion that KS107.5 is not doing to well. They have never done will in the history of that signal one bit! Moving KRWZ to 107.5 wouldn't give KOOL any competation becasue remember KOOL is no longer an Oldies station it is a Classic Hits Station. Sure they still play "SOME OLDIES" but KRWZ is true oldies. So there wouldn't be any compatation at all. They just need to up grade the 93.7 frequency and the 103.1 frequency to full power. Even up here in Northern colorado no one would be able to pick it up due to that fact we got ROCK 102.9 up here.

Can't happen with either frequency considering existing allocations on and adjacent to those channels, sorry. They are what they are.

What about the application that KLBO Limon has to move to Parker on 103.1?

It would appear that KLBO's move, if it ever actually gets done (KLBO recently filed an amendment to their pending application), would bump the 103.1 translator to either another frequency if one could be found - or simply off the air. The fact that KRWZ elected to pay so much for this 250w translator is truly surprising, unless there's something I'm not aware of. Or someone didn't do their homework.

That is what I was thinking. It seems awfully risky with the KLBO situation, unless Lincoln is willing to buy them off to amend or drop their application so as to not interfere with the translator.

Does anyone know why there is such a long delay between the AM and FM signals? I would expect the usual 8 sec. or so delay, but it must be closer to a minute.

Having heard the translator, I have to agree with the earlier poster who said he would rather hear the heavily compressed AM signal than the FM version. I will be staying with 950 to hear the music the way it was played originally. Having said that, the car radio I hear the most is a stock Honda unit in an old Civic, and the AM side sounds far better than AM on most newer car radios.

103.1 does not play the same music as AM 950..It's more classic hits, than golden oldies.
Picked up the station in Colorado Springs (very weak signal) and I heard "Little Children" 1964 to "I Just Called to Say I Love You" 1984 & "It Never Rains In Southern California" 1971

Oh yes....it's raining inches in Southern California these past few days!!

103.1 sound good so far, but they need to boost the signal a bit.

Maybe David Eduardo can fill us in on this sudden acquisition to FM. :)

The reason there would be a delay would be that their likely not feeding the translator from the AM broadcast.

Even without considering the pending allocations, there's no way 93.7 or 103.1 could upgrade to full power signals. The reason is because they are only 2 channels adjacent to existing stations. Specifically, KTCL-FM 93.3 and KRFX-FM 103.5.

Wriker mentioned Rock 102.9 but what on earth is on or near 93.7 that would prevent it from upgrading & where is/are this/those other station(s) at? I don't know of any (Unless someone put up a Part 15 station that no one knows of)

Cheers :D

Translators cannot originate; they must rebroadcast. And if they're rebroadcasting an AM signal, the contour cannot exceed the AM daytime contour. Translators are not protected, they are secondary service. Translators can't be "upgraded".

Will I am surprised no one has answered your question by now?
The reason for the delay is simple:
KRWZ is also re-broadcast on FM on HD KYGO- HD2, and on AM HD as well. So the signal gets transmitted about 3 times before it gets to the translator. By then it is behind a second (like you would be hearing it on line and try to listen to it on the radio). That is what is happening basically.
Will get an HD radio you would be surprised just how good it sounds on HD. :)
