KRXQ/98 Rock

Simple Question..

Why is it so successful all these years...with Hip Hop & Rap being so Popular

and why can Entercom just simulcast KRXQ on 102.1 in SF

Why is it a surprise? Rap and hip hop may be popular among some, and obviously there's a market for it...but it tends to attract the younger demo. Rock and Roll is (IMO anyway) wider appeal, and the demo is a bit older dependant on the rock being played. Personally I can't stand rap or hip hop. I can't relate to it. And consider there are really only 2 rock stations in the market for all practical purposes, so the choice is limited. But give 98 rock credit, they aren't just playing rock music, they are local, relating and compelling to listen to....just good radio

Oh, and they bought the competition (KWOD) and dismantled it leaving the genre to themselves. Inexplicably, none of the bottom feeder stations have flipped to take a bite of that large share. Beat KRXQ straight up? Probably not, but take a nice, salable chunk of that share? You bet!

Because Entercom decided to simulcast its new station, Classic Rock KUFX-98.5 instead.

To quote a wise man from another thread, "This horse is so dead, even the flies have moved on."

As John said, LIVE and LOCAL is the reason they're winning. If other stations embraced that simple concept with good, local talent, their ratings would be better. :)

Having the format to ones self, also not a bad formula to winning.

They were winning before they had the format to themselves...

Anyone is free to attempt to compete. But, nobody is willing to put in the time, or effort it would take.

KRXQ is a well-targeted, properly executed Rock station.

Has been for decades...

I can't understand why everyone is so obsessed about wanting it simulcating into San Francisco. As other's have stated, it is successful because it is "local". Simulcasting will cause it to lose it local identity.

I think it was more speculation than an obsession. Two stations on the same frequency... A successful format in Sacramento... A format hole in San Francisco... I can see why.
