KSAC to go Gospel on Monday

I just got off the phone with a friend who lives in Sacramento. Mike Malloy announced on the air that KSAC will be flipping to Gospel on Monday.

Most of the African-American population in Sacramento (which is 7 percent of the metro) lives with 10mv/m of KSAC's signal. I remember seeing KDYA 1190 showing up in the maximizer report when I worked up there.

I'm guessing she will be using Urban Choice Media's satellite delivered: Rejoice! Music Soul Food formerly owned by ABC Radio.

The owner will get some numbers, but will she make money?

It's a sad day for progressive talk in Sacramento. I'll admit I'm guilty of not listening to KTLK down here much anymore. I'm now more of an NPR listener now.

Good news for progressive fans though...Christine Craft is filling in at KGO all this week from 10P to 1A! Shameless plug for my buddy! Go Christine!

I don't mean to devalue anyone's information... but has anyone looked at the calendar? Sounds like some April Fool's jokes are underfoot.

That's good news from the Good News. KFIA has/had a Gospel show but with a lackluster host and not much pub, it's lost. The music is great but the production value is at best LPFM.

The Bee's Rachel Leibrock sought confirmation from KSAC.

She posted her results (as of Friday around 4pm) on the Bee's 21Q Blog:

No call back from KSAC Owner/GM Paula Nelson. Later calls to the station got an automated announcement saying the office is closed, though the hours are stated as 8-5.

She speculates as to why the phone's going unanswered.

Bee has confirmation from Malloy, his network that KSAC to go Gospel on Monday

The Bee's Rachel Leibrock has confirmation from syndicated host Mike Malloy that KSAC will flip to Gospel on Monday.

Lack of advertiser support for the station's programming was the reason cited. Malloy said its a situation that "most other liberal talk show format stations are experiencing–It's not a lack of audience, it's a lack of business support."

The host says his network is looking for a new outlet in Sacramento.

Monday will be a sad day for all of us in the Sacramento Area

Malloy said that the numbers for the station are good, it's just the lack of advertising. But anyone who's followed the soap opera that has been KSAC since they swiched to the progressive format knows they've had no sales department and a... OK, I'll refran from saying freaking nutjob running the place, but definitely someone without a clue of how to make a station profitable.

Anyone know a frequency in the Sac area running more than 100 Watts that's for sale? I'll invest. Anyone else with me?

Yeh Dude, It's a bummer maaan. I'll be out there Monday morning with a candle cemmemorating an AM station no one listens too. The hell with the gas prices, this is much more important burden all of us.

( Gee.....No wonder were losing our country.)

...and thanks to Starbucks for reminding us why message boards are, for the most part, the realm of the idiot.

Yes, people will miss a radio station they might have listened to... damn them for bringing down America (???).

If you want liberal talk ..try my show on KGO...10p-1a on KGO 810. That's on a 50,000 watt number one station that comes in clear as a bell in SAcramento and half the US..particularly at night when the skip kicks in. good night and good luck

With apologies to 'Starbucks'...this is a line worth jacking for my other message board dalliances. Thanks for the ammo, hammerpants.

Actually, only about 1% of them.

The operation was run rather poorly. I remember hearing something a year and a half ago that Paula would sell for... drumroll, please... around $15 million.

What I don't understand is how anyone can 'miss' a radio station they never listened to.

Progressives would do well to stick to topics when doing radio, but unfortunately, they too often drift into 'feelings' and opinions and namecalling. That makes crummy, unlistenable radio. Paula never figured this out.

KGO does it right. They very seldom drift into the namecalling and 'blame Bush' garbage. They usually stick to issues. I can listen to KGO all day and not feel talked down to. Sure, I roll my eyes from time to time, but I can keep listening without losing any I.Q. points.

I understand that I will probably come under fire for this, so I am ready. Here goes- Paula, Not all black people are liberal!! Yes, as difficult as it may seem to believe, some of us are conservative. However, it seems that even those of us who are conservative deep down, when in a crowd, some will not admit it and pretend to be liberal or 'progressive' just to fit in. With that in mind, if I were to do progressive radio, I would approach it from that angle. I would give listeners information that would help them carry on an intelligent conversation the next time they are with their friends. You run out of things to talk about if all you do is bash Bush and namecall.

I know, I know... But I have to admit, Bill Cosby is RIGHT. In more ways than one. As a minority that is now no longer a minority, I wish there was programming on Paula's station I could support. Playing 'poor pitiful me' won't work. Playing 'blame Bush' won't work. Educate and inform, THAT will work!

Some suspect there's a conspiracy against Progressive radio. Having spent a lot of time in Network Talk Radio I can tell you that, other than avoidance of controversy, national advertisers want national ratings. It's foolish to compare Liberal Talk with Conservative Talk when right wing talkers have a 2 decade lead and run on nearly all the major signals in major markets. You simply can't compare the audience of WWRL, New York, with WABC.

If advertisers are willing to deal with controversy, they buy on tonnage, not on politics. Conspiracy theories are fun but big audiences drive network sales. Let's also understand that some Conservative networks pay for major market clearance, New York in particular. I know of no Progressive network who could afford to do that on the scale they'd need.

Adjust the sales department until it makes money off programming.

Do not adjust programming to appease or to fit the sales department.

From All Access dot com news this afternoon, to fill the gaps
in case you were wondering:

"DIAMOND BROADCASTING Talk KSAC-AM (TALK CITY 1240),
SACRAMENTO has flipped from liberal Talk to Gospel as KRJY-AM
'REJOICE 1240.' The flip came SUNDAY morning.

"KRJY is using URBAN CHOICE MEDIA's REJOICE
GOSPEL NETWORK."

I, also, wish Paula well with this format. If this like Vallejo's
"1190 The Light" (KDYA), she should have a loyal following at
1240. KDYA, a daytimer, goes a very good job with the format...
