KSAC to Go Sports on 9/2

KSAC AM 890 along with its FM translator at 104.7 will be replacing all of the Rob Anybody and Dawn encore shows with Fox Sports. RAD will still host mornings.

This is the second time the KSAC call letters have been associated with sports. KSAC AM 1240 was sports from 9/1/91 to 10/31/94. I worked there at the time.

When KSAC 1240 dropped Classical for Sports, it was a groundbreaking move at the time. I remember thinking an all sports format would be too niche for Sacramento radio, and the success KNBR had doing it was due to being in a much larger market.

Was it the arrival of KHTK that made KSAC drop Sports? It seems like there was room for both as KHTK at the time was mostly Hot Talk, with Kings basketball, and some Sports talk.

The owner, Jonsson Communications wasn’t really interested in selling until they were approached by Dwight Case in 1994. Ken Jonsson was a good man and treated his staff fairly. He gave us all generous bonuses at the end for sticking around.

Dwight intended to create a Regional Mexican network called “Super Q” with his FM station in Fresno (which is now owned by Lotus. KLBN)

He ended up selling it to Silverado who then sold to Z-Spanish who then sold to Moon who then sold to Diamond Broadcasting (Paula Nelson). Now its owned by the the Sacramento Diocese.

and i believe they have a big local sports show to announce soon...
That is a fascinating idea…the timing is rather interesting given all these iHeart cuts, yet iHeart isn’t in the sports format here. Just sayin’…

What about Arnie (the original “A” in RAD Radio)? Last I heard, he was doing afternoons at 1140 (I think).

I can’t think of anyone else off the top of my head who isn’t either new to broadcasting or isn’t under contract at another broadcaster…

I kind of wonder how much longer Kings basketball will last with KHTK. Who knows when the contract is up but the 1140 signal has become unlistenable in the northeastern suburbs( Roseville/Rocklin) area during games where a large portion of the fan base is. At the same time many other NBA teams are switching to over to full FM stations. Obviously not KSAC but someone with a decent FM signal willing to test an all sports format in the market could easily lure the Kings away. If the As somehow end up staying here that's a potential second sports team for the station as well

Success in Sports radio does not depend largely on ratings ( although KSAC will probably win the ratings game) , is mostly dependent on the sales team..so the big question for Lotus is if they can attract some strong sales persons...

And, a year after switching to sports, KSAC (Fox Sports Radio Sacramento) is bringing Grant Napear back to the local airwaves five years after he was sent packing by KHTK.

Grant, who is now 66 years old, starts at KSAC at on Tuesday, September 2, on the 3 to 6 PM shift, which puts him in competition with Whitey and Drapes on KHTK and D-Lo and KC on ESPN Sacramento.

(Mentioning this because ... nobody else did.)
