KSAZ (finally) bumping newscasts to HD

Anyone know what was taking them so long? 5 even beat them to the punch, and they were delayed for nearly a year by technical difficulties (I say nearly a year because I remember reading that they originally planned to switch in June 2008).

It might have had to do with their dated technical plant in the old building on Adams Street. I can imagine there must not be much crawl space there for what's needed to upgrade to HD (new cabling, etc).

Just remember, going HD won't make for improved content from their newscasts.

I've wondered why the big deal of HD in newscasts of all things. Usually that will mean you get the talking head(s) and the weather map a bit clearer but that's about it. Unless you have a 2nd grade crush on the weather girl I'm not sure HD adds anything of value to a newscast - especially Fox's.

What's wrong with updating to the current technology?

Nothing, of course. And I know KSAZ has received a lot of flak about being the only FP Valley station non-HD but....

Touting HD as essential or even desired for a talking head newscast (and only local ones at that) seems advertising overkill. I realize KPHO blows its HD horn in their local newscast opening but it is just as senseless.

Seems to me you would choose a news channel based on the likability or professionalism of the anchors or the content of the newscast and not on the technology. I could understand bragging about HD on Fox's NFL games certainly but not the yuck-it-up news.

Sometimes the "current technology" can be inferior to what they've used in the past. Is it me, or when the stations which already do news in HD go to a live shot somewhere, it looks like either poor stretched-out standard definition (Channel 3) or streaming video (15)? Not to mention ABC 15's audio problem where the levels all of a sudden drop when they go to Katie Raml.

Getting back on topic, now that FOX 10 is going HD, they can at least upgrade their website (yes, the only English-language O&O in town has the worst looking website out of all the Phoenix TV stations doing news).

Actually the 15 audio drop isn't the fault of the station's technology, per se. It's just hard to hear Raml from under that 10 inches of heavy make-up!

You should be thankful!

Don't knock it; hi-def shows all the blemishes. ;D I wouldn't blame any on-camera personality for being just a little bit paranoid. Heh, maybe that's the real reason Kent Dana is getting out.

HD = Heavy Doll-up

myfoxphoenix.com says that HD newscasts will start today, Monday July 6. We'll see if that deadline holds.

Just checked out FOX 10 in HD. Looks really good, I was very impressed with how clean and clear the picture was for near 10 year old Standard Definition TV. Really looked clean and crisp. The set looks great, the graphics look good I thought, just overall really clean and crisp.

I then switched over to KPHO and the station is looking worse and worse on my Standard Def. TV. I know this is by choice, having an older TV but damn I thought the Digital Switchover would clean it up a bit.

Either the poor picture quality is my TV or could it have anything to do with Analog Nightlight they are still running?

I watch ABC 15 and looks great on my old tv, 12 looks pretty damn good too.

Congrats to KSAZ on going High Def. Anchors, reporters look good.

I'd be curious for people on here with HD TVs how do the channels look to you, all clean & crisp?

How about those with OTA & HDTVS?

I've noticed a continuing change in PQ viewing HD stations via OTA SD TV's.

Just last night the wifey and I were watching NBC Evening News on KPNX. The info window on my converter box said 1080i but the picture was so blurry that it was impossible to read the text on their stories without getting right up on the screen. I've noticed this on occasion on several other stations as well. No audio break-up and no pixilation, just poor PQ. ???

I've got an HDTV with Cox Digital and all the channels look pretty damn good to me. Maybe it's my untrained eyes, but I haven't noticed any discrepancies in picture quality on any stations.

I noticed FOX 10's HD broadcast last night. They now have more of a "virtual" set, and the Chyron graphics remind me of FOX News Channel. They're still not my preferred station for local news.

And, if someone at the station reads this board, we don't need to be reminded about NEXT year's Rock & Roll Marathon now!

I don't usually watch Fox for news (or for anything else frankly) but I did drop in on their 9PM news show Tuesday evening and, according to my converter box, it was being broadcast in 720.
