KSAZ Moving?

This Just In...

According to the FCC Database, KSAZ 580 might move to Queen Creek, Az, southeast of Phoenix. The new owner's proposal is for a Daytime power increase to 7kw on a 4 - tower directional array at the present site west of I-10. Change COL to Queen Creek From Marana, and DISCONTINUANCE OF NIGHTTIME OPERATION. This would leave ''Downtown'' Marana with no local nighttime service other than KFLT 830...And the Hits...

COL of Queen Creek with the sticks in Marana--too weird, this Barna-zation of the Giant 580.

For a mileage comparison (straight line statute miles) using the nearest airports, Willie to Pinal Air Park is 58 while Willie to Avra Valley is 67.

Will an extra 2 kw do that much for the signal? I suppose if the main lobe of a DA is aimed at Phoenix, er, I mean Queen Creek ;) then perhaps. Wonder how much will be backfilled toward Tucson? Can only speculate as the pattern plot link in the application on the FCC site is dead. KSAZ page in the FCC AM Query:

http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/amq?stat...&slat2=&NS=N&dlon2=&mlon2=&slon2=&EW=W&size=9

Also strange is that what appears to be an identical app. is listed twice.

Can't figure out why Barna would be satisified with daytime only, since in the winter sign-on is as late as 7:30 and sign-off as early as 5:15.

Maybe he can borrow the 52 watts/night that Lumberyard 1440 isn't using.;D

Here's all the engineering specs and other stats on the Giant 580's application:

http://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/...xt=25&appn=101171420&formid=301&fac_num=51079

It looks like even more of a killer signal toward both the Tucson and Phoenix
metro areas, using the 0.5 mV/m contours which is similar to the "distant" plot
on radio-locator.com. The less-used 2 mV/m contour--one of three contour
plots in the specs--barely covers the planned new COL of Queen Creek with
the 7 kw DA.

But why change the COL, and why delete nighttime service, especially if
they plan to keep the same Marana XMTR site (adding a fourth tower)?

I do take issue with their claim that a population of only approx. 43,000 will
lose night service as they seem to be equating that with a very "localized"
DA-N contour which is depicted as barely getting beyond Marana. In reality,
their 390-watt night DA does get into some of Tucson.

Did AIM consider simply applying for the daytime power/pattern change,
while keeping the COL in Marana along with the present night pattern?
Or would the Feds have "seen right through that" as a ploy just to boost
their daytime signal into Phoenix?

Perhaps we should petition Uncle Charlie to deny the Barna-zation changes,
unless maybe he promises to move Dancin' Danny Babich back to 11:00. ;D

Correction: the above should have read "the less-used 5 mV/m contour..."
(5, not 2).

The 2 mV/m plot appears to be what radio-locator equates to "local" and 0.5 mV/m
equates to "distant." 5 mV/m is a stronger contour inside of the "local" plot.

I would like to see a 0.5 mV/m plot of the current KSAZ 390-watt DA-N but it was
not included in this engineering study.

A clear signal over two of the state's largest cities is NOT genius if KSAZ pulls the plug at sunset. Why do Nurse Jeff and I think a city of license move to Queen Creek is the first step in leaving Tucson? Just what we need in Phoenix...another AM station!

I checked the FCC AM Query site for the Giant 580 this morning--

http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/amq?stat...&slat2=&NS=N&dlon2=&mlon2=&slon2=&EW=W&size=9

--and the Queen Creek application has been removed!

It shows only the current licensed day and night facilities (COL Marana,
5000w/390w DA-N).

Anyone (radioguy58?) know the scoop? That engineering study couldn't
have been cheap.

On a related--with it now being April, that means power up is 0600 and
Dancin' Danny Babich's entire show can again be heard "all over Arizona." ;)

It's baaaack!

I just checked the FCC site again and, while it was missing this morning,
the COL-to-Queen Creek application has now reappeared on the FCC
AM Query for KSAZ. Again in duplicate as before. So you can probably
disregard my post immediately above.

Maybe the site was having "technical difficulties" earlier today.

Does the FCC fine itself for its own site violations? Let's hope they don't
have their own wardrobe malfunction. ;D

We noticed the triple city ID a couple of weeks ago...should be pretty confusing if they get Queen Creek as their COL. Speaking of the Mighty 5~Eighty, here in Phoenix they sound a lot LOUDER than before. Too bad the Nurse and I keep sleepin' in on Saturday mornings and miss Dan Babich. Sure wish he'd get his old time slot back.

And for several weeks now they've been unable to play the correct
legal ID/time track after Dancin' Dan--at least on Saturdays.

It's the new track and while the ID part is OK, it tags with "it's 6:00"
(when it's actually 7:00). It's then followed by either the older
Bob Wagner-voiced "Marana/Tucson" track or the correct new cut
(ID and time tag) played again in full--so either way they're late into
the "generic" ABC News feed at 7:00.
