A good rule of thumb: If you're close enough to get a clean stereo signal indoors, you'll probably be able to get it in HD. If you have to fight to get a signal in analog, it won't get any better in digital.
I have two HD radios right now: a Boston Acoustics BA Receptor radio (since discontinued) and a portable Insignia.
At home in Missouri City, I can get all of the Missouri City sticks (not surprising, I can literally see all the towers) KPFT (when it's working) and KGLK in HD. I can get 106.9 in analog (and it's noisy). On a good day, I can get KSBJ (analog w/ lots of static) and KTRU, but most days getting 106.9/89.3/91.7 is tough on any radio in my house. I don't live within their primary contour, so it's not a surprise. (This is why 89.3 needs a translator in Sugar Land. Anybody says 89.3 comes in just fine in Sugar Land is listening in a car whose radio has blended to mono.)
I can take the portable to the gym in Missouri City and get all of the Mo City + KPFT & KGLK in HD. Because the portable is using the headphone wire as an antenna, HD doesn't always stay locked in.
At my office in Bellaire, the portable will get all of Missouri City HD signals and KPFT in HD. It can't get 89.3 or 91.7 in analog. It will get 106.9 and 107.5 in analog but not digital.
One place that HD shines is in the car, as the buffering and error correction takes care of most multipath interference. I don't have HD in the car yet, but a friend has recommended a Dual head unit that handles HD well, is under $200, and has some nice goodies like Bluetooth included. I have heard good things about Kenwood & JVC units as well.
