KSBJ sells 99.5 translator

From RadioInsight:

"KSBJ Educational Foundation sells 99.5 K258BZ Sugar Land TX to Centro Cristiano de Vida Eterna for $400,000 with $300,000 of that coming from previously paid pursuant to a Rebroadcasting Agreement."

Most likely no change to Radio Dabang on 99.5. Gotta wonder if KSBJ is thinking about selling K217GB on 91.3 in the Med Center area, which currently runs NGEN. We did have La Nueva pop up on that frequency a few months ago, perhaps as a test.

I don't care what people say. Church is a big business and they should be taxed just like the rest of us.

Churches don't make "profits" as all monies received go back into the operation of the ministry.

No different than the Red Cross or St. Jude Children's' Hospital.

That's why they are called "non-profit" organizations.

A business that does not make a profit does not pay income taxes, either.

I think it's debatable that Centro is actually a church.

The issue as far as taxation, is the need to be registered as non-profit.that can Be a church or a large variety of other organizations

If the have satisfied state and federal registration requirements To be a non-profit, then it is such. They have to make annual filings to keep the status.

Wasn't really referring to taxation. More of a commentary on the organization overall.

But if we're talking about taxation:

Knowing what they're charging to lease each of these translators to secular broadcasters, and given the size of the congregation seen in their social media videos (very, very small) and condition of their church facilities, I find it highly unlikely that they could be spending the entire proceeds, or even 1/10th of it on their non-profit, religious mission. It's a very substantial amount of money.

I'm not an accountant, but from what I've read, it appears the translator income would need to be classified as an unrelated business activity and they likely should be paying corporate taxes on that income.

It would be interesting to know if they are, in fact, paying that tax and how the income from the translators is being distributed.

It’s a non-comercial translator that serves as them for nothing! The best thing for them is to sell it to who ever wants to cover 50k people that are inside the 60dbu.

Since when did this board became taxation discussions?

The increasing ownership of commercial FM band stations by non-profit organizations makes the topic quite within the scope of this board, just as we discussed issues related to capital gains when CBS Radio was looking for a buyer and just as we can look at the tax implications being a major factor in the selection of a buyer for the Cox radio stations.

K258BZ has 720,000 persons inside its 60 dbu.
