Bruce, the good news is that it doesn't really matter if the HD2 channel is successful or not. If KSBJ's experience is anything like the Z's, their new channel will explode on the Internet. With the iPhone and Blackberry serving as the pocket transistor radio of 2009, whether HD gains traction or not, relevant programming's future will be online.
I certainly miss Z-88.3! It has been close to 10 years now since I had to move out of the central Florida area, and I can truly say that yours is one of the best stations around. A worthy successor to WCIE, and you have surpassed everything they did.
I have given KSBJ a listen a few times since posting in this thread, and I can tell you truthfully that their heart for the Lord comes out in every word the announcers say. Unfortunately, the music is slow, boring, and irrelevant to anybody out of whatever core demographic (60 plus?) that they are trying to reach. I am a member of a 51,000 member church, not a single one of them I have met listen to KSBJ, and there are no KSBJ bumper stickers on cars in their parking lot. Maybe that isn't a very scientific poll, but ---- Incidentally, I saw a faded Z-88 sticker on one car, no doubt an Orlando transplant. I also spotted two Power FM Dallas stickers on cars, along with several KLTY. Evidently, there are some other transplants to the area. Not a single "God listens" or other KSBJ sticker. My church is demographically pretty young and affluent, and definitely a major potential audience for Christian radio. What I did see were a lot of secular station bumper stickers, although bumper stickers seem to be currently out of style for cars. Not sure why - I proudly displayed my preference for Power FM when I was in Dallas, my wife displayed hers for KLTY. But then, we are both just in our 50's, definitely not in the "praise and worship" or "hymn" demographic. Actually, in the absence of palatable Christian radio, I am developing a taste for my daughter's hip-hop music. As long as the lyrics aren't bad. I also have discovered a 92.1 here that is a lot better Christian music, although slanted to a different demographic - at least the songs are not plodding 4:4 beat (BLEAH!)
If I still were involved in Christian radio to any extent, I think I would have to be thinking of a startup here in Houston slanted towards the under 50 listener. Something along the lines of Z-88.3 or WAY-FM. Because KSBJ isn't there musically for much of anybody my age or younger. It isn't what I contributed to financially in the 80's, it is a disappointment musically. If they have good ratings, that's fine, I am glad they are there for their audience, but what about the rest of us? We have no Christian radio in the Houston area.
