Does anyone know why KSBJ broadcast from so far north. Why aren't they in Missouri City? Is there a short spacing issue with of 88.7 or do they just choose to server the northern metro?

They're licensed to Humble for starters, so that's going to make the signal skew to the north... Also, they have to protect other stations (which they now happen to own), including 89.3 (KXBJ) in Victoria and 89.5 (KZBJ) in Bay City.

I'm sure if they could find a way to make a big pattern work from Missouri City they'd be there already instead of using translators and small sticks for fill.

Getting the licenses for most of the surrounding frequencies is smart because it helps ensure that noone is going to sign something adjacent on that's going to cause them grief.
______________

The primary reason, at the time, was they were third channel adjacent to KUHF and had to meet certain spacing criteria.

KSBJ started out on 88.1, also a third adjacent to KUHF. The move to 89.3 around 1987 was to eliminate interference issues to KFDM Channel 6 in Beaumont. To make room for that move, both KJIC (now KFTG) Pasadena and KSHU Huntsville moved off 89.3 to 88.1 and 90.5, respectively.

Kind of strange, but Victoria has a city grade of the station KXBJ which is simalcast of KSBJ.
______________

89.3 is 600kHz or 3rd adj from 88.7...under FCC rules, they must be a certain mileage apart (65 miles in this case for a C to C1, 3rd adj).
KSBJ is not a Class C FM either..rather a Class C1...that is limited to 100KW at 981ft (or 300 meters)..they are currently at 257 meters AGL and their community of license is Humble, not Houston...thus they are limited as to where to place the tower to cover Humble with city grade signal. Move to Mo City? Aint gonna happen anytime in our lifetimes..(unless someone can convince the FCC to change their spacing requirements and that is NOT gonna happen in the forseeable future)
