KSBJ's Sugar Land translator

What a long, strange trip this has been. After residing for several years at 99.7, applying to move to 99.5, then 99.9 and finally moving all the way down to 89.1 they've applied for another change in frequency. Citing interference problems with their current location, the KSBJ translator is going back to 99.9. The application stated that the translator was interfering with the main station on 89.3, but as noted a few months ago, with KSBJ running HD its lower sideband walked all over the translator. This whole thing has been a comedy of errors and you've got to wonder if it's actually been worth the effort.

Funny you should bring this up. This morning I got KSBJ on 99.9 in the Galleria area while trying to pull in KSHN Liberty-Dayton which does make it in to the area at times. I wonder if KSHN can complain about this to the FCC. This is another example why the FCC should expand the FM band.

Old Chicago

I've never understood why KSBJ needed a translator on the southwest side. It comes in clear with relatively no problems on 89.3. KSHN can't do anything about it because it is licensed to Liberty-Dayton. That's really unfortunate, because I enjoy KSHN, too.

I can get KSBJ 6 or 7 places on the dial. Sheesh! Let somebody else have a chance to be heard in the Houston area! At least consider putting the long awaited Christian rock feed on some of them.

Both Bill Buchanan (who owns KSHN) and I have spoken with their new engineer (on more than one occasion) about this situation. I reported to Bill yesterday (Tuesday) morning that KSBJ was back at it again. We hate to get nasty with the guy, but...

Sic 'em Andy. That translator should have never seen the light of day to begin with. Like Bruce said, they have five other signals on the air around Houston, now - 89.3 in Houston, 89.5 in Bay City, 89.7 in Brenham, 92.5 in Navasota and 91.1 in Lake Jackson. With that many signals they can afford to do without that miserable little thing.

LOL! KSHN's protected contour isn't anywhere close to K206EE. Not even in the ballpark. LOL! Good luck with your unjustifiable nastiness.

Yes, unfortunately for Shine-All-9 fans, you're right. For any complaint to be taken seriously it would have to be shown that there is significant listening that is hindered by the translator operation.

And the coverage map for the 99.9 signal on Radio-Locator is extremely generous.

If KSHN wants decent coverage in the Houston market they should go after a signal upgrade (of course they'd have to figure out what to do about first adjacent KVST.)

See - any suggestion that KSBJ is hogging frequencies and shutting out any competition is met with the accusation that we are being nasty. Contrast that attitude to that of KVTT in Dallas, which found a blank frequency, sponsored, and mentored Christian rock KVRK in its early days. And KVTT is even more traditional and PW than KSBJ.

KSBJ has been, or very soon will be, issued a "cease-and-desist" order by Lee Browning in the Houston FCC office. That translator will be off soon...perhaps even by the end of the day today.

Bruce! LOL! I'm starting to think you misunderstanding every post is part of your schtick. There was not an accusation, Andy threatened nastiness, totally unjustly I might add. Your selective reading is hilarious.

KSHN has no claim to coverage in the area where the translator operates. It's not even close, really. They have no more special right to serve that area than KTXM does. They have no protection.

If KSHN wanted to serve Sugar Land so much, then why did they not apply during the translator window too?

What a joke.

I'm lost. ??? Why would the FCC issue a "cease-and-desist" order to KSBJ for operating a legal translator?

KSBJ does NOT need it. Their 89.3 frequency covers southwest Houston, including Stafford, quite well. Having stated that, the translator is legal. However, it would serve KSHN better if it had it.KKHT needs a translator on the west side more than KSBJ needs it.

Chuck,

Don't let the ****** bags "get your goat." That's their only objective. It'll be off soon. As of yesterday afternoon, the Feds had not been able to make contact with either Mr. Chapman or Mr. Wanner.

You goin' to BTM this month??? Don't think I'm gonna be able to make this one. Tell 'em all "hi" for me!

89.3 is okay in a car in Sugar Land, but there's not much building penetration. The southwest side is on the fringe at best. My dentist's office over there can play them only via the translator. When the translator went away the first time, they turned the radio off. If my dentist and others like him is in the habit of writing KSBJ a check, I can think of a good reason they'd want to bother getting a usable signal inside buildings in Sugar Land.

The only time I've ever gotten KSHN in Southwest Houston was one afternoon with a tropo skip assist.

John,

You've hit the nail right on the head. As we ALL know, with many of these types of broadcasters, the money is "primary." Helping lead lost souls to Christ is "secondary."

That is a heck of a translator in Sugarland, they are pretty strong in Cypress, and fight it out with the 99.9 from Waco and KSHN. I would think the Waco station would be a real problem for them in Sugarland, and an incentive to move somewhere else. The least little bit of skip and its all Waco.

My opinions about Christian radio playing it safe and not offending grandma pharisee and her large check are well known. Can't touch that evil Christian rock or it might rile up somebody - never mind that affluent demographic of kids wearing abercrombie in the mall, and young professionals in starbucks, they might not send in checks to support Christian rock. But then - KRBE, Hot 95.7, etc seem to make a good living off of those demographics. nah - too risky for a Christian station to try to reach them. But KODA's beautiful music format is - where now???? It was musically similar to the present KSBJ if you ask me. NOT much to interest kids or anybody under 50.
