KSDO

I believe KSDO's drop-wire is already at the KLSD site. Their 2,500-watt signal gets out well as-is. Would there be any meaningful benefit if KSDO upgraded to a true duplex operation?

Yes, the drop wire is hanging from one of the KLSD towers.

I knew KSDO had gone through a number of STA extensions but this has been going on since 2016! So what on earth is the hold up? As far as I can tell this STA is perpetual.. with no end in sight.

Hi-Favor probably doesn't want to incur, or more likely can't afford the expense of doing the diplex.

"One" of the towers? There's only one tower. And, in addition to KLSD, it's also transmitting 93.3, 101.5, plus (I believe) 97.3 and 106.5. The last two are recent additions, due to the impending demolition of the nearby Emerald Hills sticks. I hope KLSD's single tower doesn't collapse under the weight of all those stations 😅

I haven't gone by there in a while. I was told that an additional tower was going up, to accommodate the new additions. This was a year ago...and things can always change.

KSDO filed an STA extension to continue operating from a drop wire antenna at 2,500 watts ND. They are working with Vertical Bridge to get added to the KLSD tower site.

I just learned that Michael Reagan, son of the late President, died on January 4 at age 80. Michael was a conservative talk show host at KSDO/1130 AM for 3 years from 1989-1992.

That was during the glory days of KSDO as a top rated Talk station. All of that began to change with the arrival of KOGO in 1994, which took away key hosts like Roger Hedgecock.

Were KOGO and KSDO owned by the same company back in 1994? My recollection is that a bunch of their shows
moved around then from 1130 to 600 AM.

It was 1996 when KSDO and KOGO came under the same Jacor ownership. That's when some of the hosts were moved over to KOGO like Rush Limbaugh, and Hedgecock, and 1130 became business talk. IIRC, it was in 2000 when KSDO was sold to Chase Properties, and had a syndicated Talk format until the sale to current owner Hi -Favor. Who BTW paid $10 million for KSDO. Nowadays, probably worth less than 10% of that.

Thanks for the info. Like your handle name.

Your reply reminded me that George Chamberlain had a morning talk show on
KSDO. He later moved to KOGO, I believe when KSDO shifted to Spanish programming.

I can't remember when George started on KOGO.

After he passed away in 2019, iHeart named one of the building studios after him.

Yes, but Hi-Favor quickly sold KSDO's Santee transmitter site to a housing developer. It was a large parcel, with multiple towers. So the $10 million was more for the real estate, not the radio station.

Don't really know the technical history of 1130, but weren't they originally 10 kW DA-2?

I think that the station at one time was called KSDO News+1130. Maybe someone can elaborate on that...

According to the FCC history cards, not "originally".

1947: 250w-D
1949: 5kw-DA-D
1950: 5kw-DA-LS / 1kw-N
1980: 10kw-DA-2 (original CP in 1967 was for 50kw-DA-D / 10kw-DA-N, modified in 1976)

As for the branding question, I don't know, although they had a News/Talk format starting sometime in the early 1970s.
