KSET - Beaumont

KSET appears to be back on the air from its new 4 tower array near Lumberton. They are billing themselves as the "Talk of Southeast Texas", locally owned and operated, with 'personalities we already know'. Sounds interesting. I could speculate more, but I am sworn to secrecy - sort of.

Never thought I'd live to see the day when the Beaumont area got a "new" AM. I wish them all the best, but it's a market that has virtually no AM audience other than KLVI and Orange's hometown radio station KOGT. How's the KSET signal in Port Arthur and in Orange County?

I got the idea they were testing their equipment today. The sound quality improved as the afternoon wore on, and they eventually shut down the transmitter later in the afternoon. Some of the promos they were running indicated they would cover the Triangle, with one courageously stating coverage from "Jasper to Galveston". We'll see. The signal on the west side of Beaumont where I live was about equivalent to KOLE from Port Arthur.

Pointing towards Beaumont this morning, I am getting something on 1300 that is definitely not KVET/Austin. This sounds like gospel music, but hard to make out because the signal is pretty bad. Quick search reveals a KSYB/Shreveport at 5kw, which may be the culprit that's inhibiting my reception of the new KSET. Stan, are they now ID'ing it out of Lumberton? That leaves the fine folks in Silsbee with only KLOI to call their own.

The ID for KSET is indeed Lumberton, as the towers are located near the little league field just off highway 69 in Lumberton. I had the occasion to drive to Orange this morning and I gave it the scan test on my AM radio (2008 Honda Accord with XM satellite) which doesn't pull in AM radio worth a damn. About Vidor the auto scan would no longer find 1300 (it wouldn't find KOGT in Orange either), but I could still listen to the station, albeit a weakened form. I did not go all the way to Orange, but they are claiming they will serve (and cover) the entire Triangle. Here in the west end of Beaumont, the signal is stronger today than yesterday, so I imagine they are still working the bugs out.

I doubt that. The pattern isn't shown yet on Radio-Locator, but you can see it on the original application here by scrolling down to figure 6 [page 5]: https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/cdbs...h.cgi?exhibit_id=513287&formid=301&q_num=5110 The daytime city-grade signal should cover Beaumont and most of the Port Arthur area but not Orange. At night it looks like their 320 watts probably won't provide much of a listenable signal past Beaumont due to a pattern that has mainly east/west lobes.

I wonder if they are full power yet, or are making some adjustments because I drove to Port Arthur this afternoon and signal was really unlistenable in the car, fading in and out, by the time I got to Nederland. Seems like they have some work to do.

Hardly the entire Triangle, but at least 1300 is serving someone again. I tried several times yesterday to pull it in, but to no success. KVET is just too close this far west.

They are still testing. Picked them up as far west as Anahauc, but they have not been broadcasting at night.

Well, the promos continue to run on KSET, when it is on the air. For a time, it was on the air 24 hours a day, and they said they were testing the equipment. The signal is currently very poor, both day and night, in terms of covering the triangle. Apparently they are waiting on approval from the FCC for some changes to take place before they hit the air with all their local programming. It will be quite interesting to see if they make a dent in KLVI's numbers. They can, if they have a decent signal. I'll look forward to listening to someone somewhat younger than the moribund Al Caldwell in the morning.
