KSJO 92.3 San Jose's new "Save Alternative" format

...is incredible! If you haven't given it a listen, THIS is how alternative should sound, period. Old cuts that barely make the light of day are played (I heard "Head" by Tinstar, "Born Slippy" by Underworld, "Sometimes" by My Bloody Valentine, "Thats When I Reach For My Revolver" by Mission of Burma to name a couple) along with the classics (The Cure, The Smiths, Wire, Psychedelic Furs, I could go on and on!) The playlist is wide, deep, and all sorts of new amazing new music being played like White Lies, Cut Copy, Local Natives, Foster the People, Klaxons etc. There is even some "hits" or more familiar material thrown in for good measure. It's an amazing balance between known and unknown. It's really exciting radio to listen to.. Join the FB, they are interacting with listeners for feedback on what to play and not to play. Not sure what the future is, but they say they are sticking around for now, let's hope for a long time!

Yes @ the above! I'm so glad that this type of radio is back on air (for now, anyway.)

In the past few days, I've heard:

Pet Shop Boys - Rent
New Order - Krafty
Brand New - Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades
Royksopp - Poor Leno
Snow Patrol - Hands Open

...and many others, including Phoenix tracks that aren't "1901" and "Lisztomania." Even some from their older albums They even threw in 'iF U C Jordan' once, haha. THIS is what alternative is supposed to sound like.

I kind of feel like digging deep into CD cuts is basically Triple A (even if it's only Alternative and no Classic Rock) - or maybe where Triple A's headed soon

That's a public radio station's HD2 channel. This is a station on the regular dial. Big difference.

He was obviously trying to shamelessly plug his station
Also, keep in mind this is in the top 4 market (KSJO's signal does cover most of the SF/Bay Area market)

Nah, it was totally shameful. But the format is somewhat reminiscent of what I've been doing at Altrok 90.5 HD2 (and I've been doing it, one way or another, since 2003...well, since 1985, really, if you count FM106.3.) I'm thinking, why listen to commercials when you don't have to?

Market 51 is an okay slice of the market...

KSJO's signal barely covers 2.1 million of the 7.0 million total population of the San Francisco MSA with a 65 dbu signal, the minimum for satisfactory and reportable in home and at work listening. KSJO comes nowhere near covering "most of" the SF MSA.

Ok, sorry Mr. Factoid Machine, It covers "a little" then. Less than 65 may not be satisfactory but is still listenable you know.

Ok, sorry Mr. Factoid Machine, It covers "a little" then. Less than 65 may not be satisfactory but is still listenable you know.

In a review of a dozen markets (including SF and San Jose) over 10 years, plotting at home and at work listening by ZIP code 80% of the listening at these locations is inside the 70 dbu and 95% is inside the 65 dbu.

To 95% of listeners, less than 65 is not listenable.

So, while some home and work receivers may get signals at that level (within walls, such reception is less than satisfactory), it's only 5% of the listening outside the 65, so the population figures are a good indication of potential, since nearly 70% of listening is at home and in the car.

That should have been "70% of listening is at home and at work."

In car ranges from about 25% (New York City) to around 33% (LA and quite a few other sprawling markets).

Today, programmers in charge 92.3 S*ALT have stated that the format will flip to ethnic programming on Wednesday. The station will remain a presence on the 104.9 signal Saturday & Sunday nights from 8PM to midnight, 104.9 HD 2 and online.

Wonder if Principle is brokering them airtime on 104.9, seems that's what most of their programming consists of...

As of 10 PM on March 30, the online stream (and, I assume on-air broadcast) has been looping the playlist posted at http://www.savealternative.com/playlist.htm for about two days. Although the playlist is amazing, it's no fun hearing a loop. It really sounds like the owners are putting very little (if any) money into KCNL's HD-2 programming. The station IDs remind me of those we made at my college radio station, segues are generally rough, and there is no legal I.D.

Considering the well-chosen, excellent music that SaveAlternative airs, I'd love to see the station owners throw a little more support their way.
