KSJO-FM Jazz 1946 to 1968?

Hey Guys:

I was reading this from Wikepida.

Was KSJO-FM 95.3 then 92.3 a "ALL JAZZ" station with "ALL FEMALE DJ'S" from Dec 1946 to 1968?

Is this true?

Thanks

T.J.

I don't know what a "Wikepida" is, but KSJO-FM (on 95.3 FM from 1947 until early 1959, when it moved to 92.3) changed to Progressive Rock in 1967, so the "ALL FEMALE DJ'S" were gone by then.

And, now that I think of it, Bob Holmes was doing shows on both KSJO AM & FM as far back as 1955, so the FM was not "all female, all the time."

TJ:
Gotta use that Google Books Billboard link I sent you....

A trade ad in the February 1, 1960 Billboard shows KSJO as playing "Onward Christian Soldiers" by the Harry Simone Chorale...so they can't have been all jazz.

The October 22, 1955 issue mentions Bob Holmes doing a "spin it or stop it" feature...unlikely to be on a jazz station. And, as a previous poster mentioned, Bob's not a woman.

The October 22, 1949 issue shows a picture of Frank Darian of KSJO (again, not a woman).

The December 3, 1966 issue has KSJO listed in a trade ad as playing the new Dean Martin single.

The June 23, 1958 issue has Bill Calder joining the KSJO airstaff.

Hey Michael:

I actually was using the billboard articles you have given me for my research in the bay area. I looked up all of those issues you mentioned.

The Dec 3 1966 article stood out to me that is why I was asking the question to see if anybody in the market can give me accurate info if KSJO-FM was Jazz or not. I am starting to think it was not all jazz at all and that KSJO-FM was MOR/stds.

The only thing I can come up with is that 92.3 simucasted 1590 KSJO until 1960. When 1590 was sold to another company (Cal Radio Inc-1960) and 92.3 was sold to a seperate company then KSJO-FM started it's own programming as a stand alone FM. Maybe it went jazz then. I am not sure.

Again Michael thank you very much for that link. I have been using it a lot and have gotten great info from it. If I can't find it on those billboard links that is when I will ask questions here on the board.

One thing to watch for, however: in the Billboard articles, is it saying "KSJO-FM," or just KSJO?

If it's just "KSJO" and it's before the AM became KLIV in June 1960, it could be refering to the AM only...

Pretty sure there was a KSJO (AM) at one point, contemporary with the FM, so the FM would have had the -FM suffix.

Don't believe there ever was a KITS on AM so calling it KITS-FM is a misnomer.

The station at 1590 AM used the KSJO call letters from its inception in September 1946 until June 1960, when it became KLIV.

Hey Guys:

I found out from the broadcasting yearbooks that KSJO-FM 95.3 then 92.3 simulcated programming 100% of KSJO 1590 from 1946 to 1960 until KSJO-AM 1590 was sold in 1960 and became KLIV. This is where KSJO-FM had it's own programming.

This is where I think the Jazz format came in.

The FM was still owned by the original owner Patrick Peabody (AQ 1948) and he owned KSJO-FM till 1967 when he sold 92.3 to SRD Braodcasting Inc.

In 1967 KSJO FM under Scott Ellrod's SRD Broadcasting was an automated jazz format with all girl announcers. By 1968 several live segments with dj's like Jim Hilsabeck, Ginger Man, Larry Johnson, Mark Williams, etc began playing progressive rock. This evolved innto a completely live 24/7 progressive rock format with the automated jazz format completely gone. Ellod brought in from KLIV, GM Bob Solberman and Sales Manager, Hugh MacPherson. Later, Larry Mitchell was hired to be Program Director. He brought in dj's J. William Weed and Uncle Jack from Southern California. The studios remained on Master's Hill on Aborn Road next to the transmitter while the offices were located in Town and Country Village now Santana Row.
