KSJO Universal 92.3 to Drop Brokered Programming

That Makes Me Cringe We Need More Local Groups Owning Radio Stations EMF Would Just Shoot Down Another Signal!!

Keep in mind that KSJO is not a "San Francisco" signal. It is strictly a South Bay signal, serving Santa Clara County (San Jose embedded Nielsen metro) and the area on the peninsula and east bay just north of San Jose.

San Jose already has one country station. It could not use another.

Smooth Jazz is not going to be demographically or ethnically a good match for the South Bay, and it's age appeal would make it pretty much unsalable in a mostly transactional market.

David, if you take a look here it seems that its about to go Nash for sure: https://twitter.com/tweet_chip/status/461498775635120128 is this really confirmed or not?

It would be very odd, since the signal is not a full market one and San Jose already has a long-established country station. Of course, "odd" often defines the stuff the Cloud People do.

More likely is that they will gnash KSCS.

Yes, that's what I also have in mind, but I wonder who is this Tom Taylor of what the tweet is describing about.

Tom is among the best industry journalists around.

So there may be more than one gnashing incidents next week. It all depends on who the LMA is going to go to.

So do you know the time frame of the New Format on 92.3?

Since the LMA begins next week, I would guess perhaps the beginning of the week. They might stunt... or just jump in.

Country?
K-Love?

I'm beginning to gnash my teeth contemplating which it will be.

Just checked U923FM webpage and slowly removing their content and advertisements from their page, they removed partial schedules for their paid programing radio shows and redirecting links to KLOK 1170 AM. It looks like I'm smelling that gnash sensation already, we must wait until Memorial Day.

Talked to a former spanish host today who had a brokered program and was a program director for Universal Media Access on KSJO, her last day was today and she said this to me in quotes: "aún no podemos decir quién es el nuevo propietario de la radio. Pero de hecho estarán un tiempo en nuestro edificio".

Translate Quote: "We can not yet say who will be the new owner of the radio. But for a time they will be in our building".

We shall see Tuesday

If it is country, it will likely happen on Memorial Day. That's a nice tie-in with the embedded patriotism that is part of the format.

If it is indeed Cumulus, and they are talking about a "top 10 market" they are even bigger idiots than I thought. San José, an embedded market, is the 36th metro and 72nd in revenue. KSJO is not a San Francisco signal... it is strictly a South Bay signal and it has to compete with an established, heritage and locally programmed country station in KRTY.

But the groundswell of reports including All Access and the daily newsletters indicates that it will be a Nash debut.

Yes, idiots indeed on choosing Nash FM as a San Francisco Market just made them to do a bad decision. They did not even realize that KSJO was a strict South Bay signal and just went though the purchase with United Media Access. Good luck to them but they will not do as good with ratings on the San Francisco side. The Wolf 95.7 failed miserably.

It is very clear that Nash FM studios will temporarily move at the South King Rd office located in San Jose, they will share the building with Universal Media Access temporarily before purchasing another location to broadcast.

Its not really stupid, if your going to create another country station you might as well put it on a signal where country works the most, in san jose, and maybe simulcast on 107.7 for San Francisco.

I picked up KSJO when I lived in Pacifica near SF

"Picking up" a signal and getting listeners consistently are two different things. About 80% of all in-home and at-work FM listening is inside the 70 dbu contour, and 95% is inside the 65 dbu curves.

OK, here's the logic: San Jose is 36th in population, and 76th in radio billings. Although the existing country station is averaging near a 6 share 12+, it only bills about $5 million, while the #1 biller in San Francisco does six time that.

Let's say that Nash gets half the country shares, bringing both stations to around a 3 share in the San Jose book. Each would then bill around $1.75 to $2 million as stations with low shares don't even get considered for buys. And that would make both of them marginal operations.

KSAN bills nearly $10 million, so they would be giving up mediocre San Francisco billings for poor San Jose revenue.

Under this logic, it sounds like something that Cumulus would do!
