There also was a satellite hard rock format called "Z-Rock." Some AM stations that were co-owned with Rock FM stations used it. 1480 WZRC New York was co-owned with 92.3 WXRK, which had Howard Stern in the morning and Classic Rock the rest of the day, took an underperforming Tropical AM station and put Z-Rock on it. One of Stern's staff, Stuttering John Melendez, did some shows for the AM. Otherwise, they ran the DJs and music from the satellite service.
I guess they were hoping young men who found FM Rock formats too tame would opt for the harder 1480 AM. It didn't run too long in NYC but I understand in some medium and small markets, it ran for several years.
