KSKY 92.9FM?

What is the deal with KSKY 660AM simulcasting on 92.9FM? I have yet to hear them give any station ID aside from "KSKY 660AM". It was the only clear FM station where I could listen to my Sirius/iPod via my FM transmitter. Now instead of listening to Stern or O&A, I have religious talk programming.

Talk about two different extremes...

I'm not sure where the 92.9 xmitter is located, but it comes in very strong in southern Tarrant county.

I can recieve 660am very clear after sunset so the AM interferince excuse doesn't hold much water.

Probably because of the regular pattern change.

KSKY has a translator on 92.9. Unfortunately I cannot figure out which particular application in the FCC database is the right translator.

As you've probably seen by following the threads the one at 92.9 in Dallas and the two in Tarrant County on 95.5 (licensed to Fort Worth and Arlington) aren't translators. They're termed "emergency repeater" stations. So that's why they don't show up anywhere in the FCC database except under the applications list for KSKY as STA's (special temporary authority).

Translators, of course, are required to be identified on-air. But the rules don't require it every hour, only during certain dayparts. Since the KSKY "repeaters" are unique and don't fit any of the usual categories I don't know what the ID requirements would be. In fact there may not be a rule which covers that, at least not yet.

KGGR 1040 am has one at 102.5. It sounds pretty good even though it is in mono. It basically gives KGGR a nighttime presence since 1040 is a daytimer.

We talked about this travesty last December. KSKY gets a valuable FM license through a loophole. 1040 had their shot at FM years ago, and sold their FM outlet. I don't think they should be handed a second chance. Now a couple of dozen fans of their niche format are happy, and Collin County listeners to full service KMAD are screwed.

I got the little direct connect FM modulator for my car that has a Delco stock radio. Really remarkable device, it takes its power from the satellite antenna cable (the little antenna module actually contains an active LNA as well as antenna), and it interrrupts the FM signal from the antenna so you can use any frequency, even a local. Four connections - car antenna in. car antenna out, satellite antenna in, satellite antenna out - DONE! Of course mine is for an XM radio, but they probably have one for Sirius as well. Side benefit - there is no modulation limit on the direct connection, so FM is full volume. Almost as good as having an auxiliary jack on the Delco.

That was a different time, different ownership group and different format. 102.5 is very strong in Southern Dallas County, but its very spotty in Irving. I have yet to see how it plays near Downtown Dallas or north of the Trinity River. I hope its strong there.

Here is the radio-locator "solely for entertainment purposes" coverage map:

A quick Longley-Rice analysis of the signal shows the 65dB contour lying totally within 635 to the east, north and south, and extending to the Cockrell Hill Rd. area to the west.

I still think a group of us in Collin county should file a formal complaint. KMAD is aware of the situation, maybe if a large enough group of listeners complain, we could have the translator either revoked or cut way down in power.

I also hope a way can be found to move KMAD into the market formally and finally shut this translator down.

I think 102.5 Out Of Waco Prevents Kmad From Moving in...

KLAK moved into Collin County even though there is a 97.5 in Waco. There is probably a way it could be worked out. There is even a translator in Dallas on 97.5, and the move-in only forced them to go down in power.

KWTX's transmitter is roughly 20 miles south of KBRQ's, which is in Hood County near the McLennan County line. For the purposes of ownership, Clear Channel was going to have to divest it when the FCC used contour overlap to determine markets because it overlaps with so many Dallas sticks. KBRQ would probably have to change COL's and would definitely have to move the transmitter if KMAD were to move closer to Dallas.

Also, keep in mind that KLAK's move took years to accomplish and had several false starts.

Not to mention it wasn't the move they really wanted...the original KLAK move-in proposal was to have it follow 96.7 and 101.7 as full C rimshots from the northwest via an allocation change of 97.5C2 Durant to 97.5C Keller.

Where do I sign?

I would start by contacting KMAD - they are aware of the situation, they have the most at stake, and are the ones standing to lose portions of the lucrative Collin county market. Even if they consider themselves Sherman Dennison, they will not turn down listeners and the possibility of Collin county advertisers. The more Collin County listeners that contact them, the more likely they are to file a protest with the FCC as a full service FM station threatened by a new translator. There are no 1mV contour rules that apply. The regulation covers interference to a full service station. ANY full service station listenable in the area. Let's get this junk on 102.5 shut down!!!!!

I hope and pray this gets nowhere....
